Crunchdeal: Save $500 on a Toshiba R600 with OpenSolaris

So here’s a deal, but it’s a bit odd. The Toshiba R600 is advertised as being Toshiba’s ultimate notebook, and for the price it better be. You can buy it from Toshiba’s website for $2,099 for the base model which includes a 160GB hard drive, 3GB of RAM, and a 12.1″ screen, and comes standard with Windows 7. But that’s not the deal. If you don’t want to use Windows 7, and would prefer OpenSolaris, you can buy the exact same machine for $500 less . Odd, I know. And it definitely makes you wonder exactly how much you’re paying for that copy of Windows 7 Starter. [Thanks to Chris for the tip]

Microsoft Zune music / video services going wherever Windows Phone 7 Series goes

Hear that, globetrotters? Just months after your hopes and dreams were obliterated , we’re now hearing that the Zune HD and its associated music / video services are going international, and it could happen by the end of the year. At least that’s the word given to Mary Jo Foley from Casey McGee, Microsoft Senior Marketing Manager. In a recent sit-down, Casey noted that the company’s Zune music / video service “would be available in all countries where Windows 7 Phones will ship,” and while it has yet to make that full list of nations publicly available, we already learned that the new mobile OS has gained support from mobile operators all over Europe. Putting two and two together can be…

LEAKED: Windows Mobile 7’s Interface [PICS]

In a few hours, Microsoft is expected to reveal Windows Mobile 7 to the world at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Some leaked pictures of the interface have spoiled its debut, though. Learnbemobile , a German mobile blog, got a couple snapshots of the interface and has posted them on Facebook . Funny enough, it wasn’t a leaked phone that has given us our first glimpse of Windows Mobile 7, but a promotional banner at MWC that was being altered, giving an opportune photographer time to snap a few shots. As Engadget points out , the interface not only sports a clean multi-box interface, but it also includes Xbox Live integration and a section specifically for Facebook. While …

Windows XP patch fiasco gets even crazier, Microsoft now scrambling for solutions

If you ever needed a reason to go Linux, here you go. The noise surrounding this patently obscure Windows XP bug / patch fiasco has just reached a fever pitch, and now we’ve got engineers within Redmond scratching their heads, too. As the story goes, Microsoft recently patched a security hole that took care of an antediluvian DOS vulnerability , and in doing so, some users began to see BSODs and endless reboots. Today, we’ve learned that the patch has been yanked, and Microsoft is suggesting that malware is to blame. But here’s the skinny — the patch simply disturbed the malware, which called…

Rumored Windows Phone 7 details surface ahead of MWC launch: Zune-like UI, no multitasking

We’ve had a pretty clear indication that Microsoft would have plenty to say about Windows Mobile 7 at MWC this month, and it looks like we now have the first significant batch of rumored details ahead of the presumed launch. While nothing is close to being confirmed just yet, PPCGeeks has received what it describes as some “truly amazing information” about what’s now apparently known as Windows Phone 7, and it certainly paints an interesting picture. According to the site, Windows Phone 7 will sport an interface that’s “very similar” to the Zune HD, along with a complete revamp of the start screen, and a…

Lenovo introduces AMD-based IdeaPad G455A for China

Lenovo already roll out a few AMD-based ThinkPads earlier this month, and it’s now also expanded things to its IdeaPad line with its new G455A model, which looks to be exclusive to China for now. Sliding in right above Lenovo’s netbook offerings, this one packs a 14-inch, 1,366 x 768 display, along with a 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II M320 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and Windows 7 for an OS — among other standard fare — all for a price tag of 3,999 yuan, or just under $600. Still no indication of a release over here, but this one looks to be available in China right now. Lenovo introduces …

Early Windows Mobile 7 build gets handled, incompatible with previous WinMo apps?

In case you weren’t aware, Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin is somewhat of a living legend around these parts. The Russian-borne phone guru manages to get his hands on an ample number of then-unreleased devices and juicy scoops — but he’s also been known to get things dead wrong from time, so keep that in mind. This time he might’ve just outdone himself with some apparent hands-on time with Windows Mobile 7 . Here’s what he’s saying via Twitter: the OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There’s “a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks… for WM users it will be…

PalmOS lives on, Aceeca releasing two devices this year

Sure, all the cool kids might have moved on webOS these days, but the venerable PalmOS hasn’t totally kicked it yet — a company called Aceeca is actually releasing two Garnet-based devices later this year. If you don’t remember the entire sordid saga, the source code for PalmOS actually ended up with Access, which now licenses it out to other companies — including Palm , as it happens. Confusing? Yes. So is the idea of forking over $199 for the Aceeca PDA32 Garnet, which packs an unnamed ARM CPU, a QVGA screen, and an SD expansion slot into a case that’s “taller than a Palm TX and about twice as thick.” Oh, and you’ll have to…

Video: Windows Mobile 6.5.3 caught on film

Our buddies over at Phonescoop spotted a handset running a copy of the as-of-yet unreleased Windows Mobile 6.5.3 floating around at CES, and were nice enough to snap some footage for everyone not living in the Las Vegas Convention Center this week. They run through just about everything 6.5.3 has to offer, from the new finger-friendly UI to the brand new, seemingly much improved onscreen keyboard; if Windows Mobile is your thing, be sure to check it out. Crunch Network : CrunchGear drool over the sexiest new gadgets and hardware.

ASUS Eee PC 1001P with Atom N450 appears on Amazon.de

With Christmas out of the way and CES just around the corner we’re starting to see significant momentum in the Pineview department (which is between HR and the Engadget Bouncy Moon Castle). Currently listed on Amazon.de as a pre-order item for €249 (roughly $360), the Asus Eee PC 1001P is a 10.1-inch clamshell PC featuring an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM a 160GB HDD and Windows XP. Between this bad boy and that 1005P/PE we first set eyes on earlier this month , it sure looks like the next-gen processor will be available sooner rather than later. Wouldn’t that be… magical? ASUS Eee PC 1001P with Atom N450 appears on Amazon.de originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Dec…
