Anyone Interested In Buying A Geo-Aware Social IM Service?

RadiusIM , the New York-based startup behind the eponymous location-aware instant messaging service, is actively trying to find a buyer, we’ve confirmed with multiple sources. We first caught wind of the company back in August 2006, and dubbed it ‘another proximity-based IM service’ . The company is not too shy about e-mailing all the usual suspects to see if they’d be interested in acquiring them outright, so either they wanted this to become public knowledge and we’re helping them, or they’re so desperate to find someone to take the service off their hands that they really had no other option left but to contact anyone who could be potentially interested by e-mail. Or both…

imo.im Quietly Building One Solid Multi-Network Instant Messaging App

When I first covered imo.im back in February, I wrote it was one of the best Web apps for instant messaging you’d likely never heard of, and chances are you’ve forgotten all about it since then. To be honest, so had I, but the team got in touch last week to let us know it had added some useful new features to the service over the past few months and that we should give it another look. We aim to please, so here goes. Imo.im is a multi-network IM tool, which means you can use …

Massive E-Mail Phishing Attack Hits Web

In a situation that may still be developing, major phishing exploits have hit webmail services over the past few days, including Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL Mail, and others. As usual with mass phishing attacks — which aim to trick people into surrendering personal details about their online identities — it’s unclear what group or groups are behind the initiatives. The one thing that is certain is the attacks are big. “This is on a scale that is incredibly rare,” said Mike Halsey, who runs The Long Climb, a PC support site in the U.K. “I don’t think it’s ever happened to this extent before, at least that I’m aware of.” A Fluid Situation The situation is unfolding rapidly. Halsey said a couple of …

Microsoft Debuts Mobile Backup Service ‘My Phone’, Adds Premium Features

Coinciding with the introduction of the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, Microsoft has upgraded and launched its free phone backup service My Phone – previously in beta – and added a couple of useful premium features to it. Despite the fact that the official My Phone blog and Twitter account remain silent for the time being, users have definitely taken notice and started tweeting about it. If you have a Windows phone, you can use Microsoft My Phone to backup all your data, including your contacts, calendar, photos and more to a password-protected website. When you switch to a new Windows phone, or you lose (data on) your current one, you can head to the …

Steven Sinofsky To Head Microsoft’s Windows Division

Microsoft’s Windows Division has a new leader. Steven Sinofsky, a 20-year veteran at the software giant, will take on his new role as president of the division this week, the company announced Thursday. Sinofsky, known for directing the Windows and Windows Live engineering teams at the Redmond, Wash.-based company, will lead both the engineering and marketing of Windows, Internet Explorer, and Windows Live. The executive previously oversaw the development of Microsoft Office’s system of programs, servers and services. He was responsible for the development of Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office XP, and Microsoft Office 2000. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer also credits Sinofsky with getting Windows 7 ready for its expected Oct. 22 shipping date. “Steven Sinofsky has demonstrated the ability…

Steven Sinofsky promoted to president of Windows

With Windows 7 just months away from release , Microsoft is putting a new individual in charge of the whole Windows division. Steven Sinofsky — who was previously responsible for squashing thousands upon thousands of early Win7 bugs as the senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group — now has a shiny new title. We’re told that as president, Mr. Sinofsky “assumes responsibility for the Windows business including both the engineering and marketing functions for Windows, Windows Live and Internet Explorer.” Yeah, pretty broad. Oh, and it’s not clear if the former prez’s decision to green light that patently disgusting “vomit” spot for IE8 was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but whatever …

Microsoft wants you to share WinMo apps with yourself; others, not so much

With the App Store , App Catalog , App World , Ovi Store , and all shades of third-party mobile software stores out in the wild, Microsoft’s undoubtedly looking at Windows Marketplace as being one of the more important features it’s bringing to the table in the fanfare surrounding WinMo 6.5 . Differentiating features that Redmond can pimp against the competition — all of which sound like identical concepts from a quick glance on paper — could be a key offensive weapon in keeping 6.5 playing with the big boys long enough to get WinMo 7 out of the door, but one thing we now know won’t be a part of that is a useful app sharing concept. As it was originally understood, the idea was that the Windows …

Samsung’s SGH-t349 now official, still bright green

Emerging from the rumor mill this morning in all of its limey goodness is the SGH-t349, Samsung’s 20-key partial QWERTY candybar phone for T-Mobile. This guy has by no means proven camera shy thus far, so it’s no real surprise - but hey, lets see you make a cell phone without anyone finding out about it. Coming in at a few bucks shy of the price of a good meal ($14.99 on a 2-year contract), it’s not exactly jam packed full of feature flavor - but it’ll get the job done. The 1.3 megapixel camera has 4x digital zoom, it’s got AIM, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo IM …
