Battle of Puppets brings the fight to the marionette stage

Topics: Gaming , Software , Deals , App Store Battle of Puppets fell through the cracks here when it was first released, and that was unfortunate — it’s a 2D real-time strategy game for the iPhone with a distinctive art style and a plethora of cool features that definitely deserves a look. The team has been updating the app often, and the latest update not only adds in achievements and leaderboards via the OpenFeint platform, but also has dropped the price to just 99 cents for a limited time. The game has a surprising amount of strategic depth — more than you’d expect for an iPhone title. There…

Mac 101: Keep an eye on the trash for auto-updated apps

Topics: Mac 101 More Mac 101 , our series of tips and tricks for novice Mac users. This isn’t so much an actionable “Here’s how to accomplish X” sort of Mac 101 as it is a “Aha, so that’s what’s going on there” reminder. If you’ve ever been prompted by one of your favorite applications to download and install an updated version, chances are you’ve been served by the Sparkle framework . Andy Matuschak’s open-source updater code is at work in hundreds of Mac apps, saving you the aggravation of having to go and track down new versions yourself. It’s a beautiful thing. One of the nice features of the Sparkle approach to updates is that the code gracefully moves the old version out of the way when the new version is…

Dilbert Revisits Twitter [PIC]

You may remember that a couple months ago, Dilbert and his co-worker convinced his boss to join Twitter so they could track his updates and slack off accordingly. Today, Twitter makes a return to the classic comic strip, this time with Dilbert’s pet, Dogbert, deciding to give the microblogging platform a try. Facebook recently rolled out the option for Page admins to syndicate their updates to Twitter . Meanwhile, Twitter’s Facebook app lets you push tweets to Facebook. However, at this point there’s still no easy way to push status updates to Twitter. MySpace has just beaten Facebook to the punch, and rolled out two-way Twitter sync . Onkyo TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 receivers keep the updates rolling

More than a few people have been interested in Onkyo’s x07 receiver updates, and now the newness has come to the TX-SR707 and TX-NR807 models. The outgoing TX-SR706 and TX-SR806 models are well-specced to begin with, and thankfully Onkyo didn’t mess with that formula. As you can guess from the “NR” designation, the $1,099 TX-NR807 adds in network streaming (including Pandora, Rhapsody, DLNA and Windows 7) to the 135-Watt/channel output. If you can do without the networking and only need 100-Watts, the TX-SR707 will save you a couple hundred bucks. Both models are THX Select2 badged, Faroudja scaling, and let you pick how to use your rear surround outputs by including both Dolby ProLogic IIz and Audyssey DSX processing. Like…

T-Mobile G1 owners to get Android v1.5 Cupcake update next week (For real this time)

After a somewhat steady stream of T-Mobile USA customers reported that the Android “Cupcake” update had hit their G1s last week , all went silent. Not everyone had gotten their updates, and it seemed as if the rollout had suddenly stopped. Whether this first batch of updates was a mistake, we’re not sure - but at least now we know when it’s coming for everyone. The update will officially begin rolling out at the end of next week, with roll-outs continuing through the month. Yeah, we know - that’s about as vague as it comes, but it’s good to know that Cupcake is finally on the way. It’s been a long time coming, but the …
