HootSuite to Integrate with Foursquare and MySpace This Week

Today at the #140tc Twitter Conference in Seattle, Washington (which I keynoted this morning), HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes announced that its popular Twitter application will be integrating with both MySpace and Foursquare, starting this week at the South by Southwest Interactive conference. HootSuite is one of the more popular Twitter applications, one specifically geared towards power users and businesses. It has been on a roll recently, launching integration with Wordpress and rolling out new updates to its iPhone and Android Apps . While Mr. Holmes didn’t divulge many details about the MySpace and Foursquare integrations, we can make some…

Twitter controversy mars Shorty Awards ceremony

The Shorty Awards were handed out last night in New York amid incredible controversy. The awards, if you’ve never heard of them before, are handed out to Twitter users who exemplify Twitter’s potential “to create the best real-time short form content.” It’s sorta cute I guess, just recognizing people who tweet interesting things. There’s one problem, and it has to do with the award handed out in the “Weird” category. The winner of the weird award was The Llama ( @DoWhatITellYou ) someone who tweets what you’re supposed to do. Like , “Pretend you have a dog or cat in your lap, …

The Slow Death of a Social Network

A few weeks ago, when News Corp’s digital chief, Jon Miller, fired MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta and replaced him with Co-presidents Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn, I decided it was time to write the social networking site’s epitaph . The recent exodus of executives and technical talent has only bolstered my belief that MySpace is nothing more than a carcass of its former self. In fact, it’s been rotting away for the past few years, as these charts illustrate. The first graphic shows the comparison between Facebook and MySpace. The Johnny–come-lately controls 74 percent of the social networking market, according to data collected…

Hovercards: Twitter Launches New Profile Preview Feature

Twitter has just introduced a new feature for its users: Hovercards, a new way to access profile information without actually visiting someone’s profile. In an announcement , Twitter Spokesperson Jenna Sampson discussed how the new feature works: “Hovercards are cards which appear when you hover over a username or avatar. The cards display additional information about the person and allow you to interact with them while staying within the context of your page.” If you hover over a person’s username in your timeline, their profile information, location, and whether you follow them will appear. You also get the options menu, which allows you to follow, block, mention, or report someone right there. The feature isn’t active for everyone …

The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will air its televised portion tonight at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST, but the non-televised portion of the awards are already streaming live on the web. One of the early social media hat tips in evidence comes from artist Imogen Heap , who accepted an award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical wearing a specially crafted “Twitter Dress.” The dress, which has its own Twitter feed , displays Twitter pics sent by fans in real-time using the hashtag #twitdress . The artist uploaded a pic of the “dress in progress” to her yfrog account last night (pictured below), with Twitpic …

Why New App Stores are Embracing Open Development

The Apple App Store set the standard for a centralized, trusted marketplace of device-specific software applications. Now, three billion downloads later, technology titans like Intel and Ford are attempting to strike pay dirt with their own app stores. While Apple’s 100,000 strong App Store is the unquestioned champion of the software colosseum, it became clear in interviews that the directors of new stores were taking a distinctly different approach to development. While Apple has been widely criticized for what was perceived as a lengthy and secretive review process , three stores in particular — Twitter’s OneForty, Intel’s AppUp, and Ford’s Sync Open API — each embody a more laissez-faire approach to the app marketplace. Faith in…

Seesmic for Android Adds Twitter Search, Lists and Trending Topics

Last month when popular Twitter client Seesmic launched an Android version , one of the few omissions we noted was support for Twitter search and trending topics.
