Early Windows Mobile 7 build gets handled, incompatible with previous WinMo apps?

In case you weren’t aware, Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin is somewhat of a living legend around these parts. The Russian-borne phone guru manages to get his hands on an ample number of then-unreleased devices and juicy scoops — but he’s also been known to get things dead wrong from time, so keep that in mind. This time he might’ve just outdone himself with some apparent hands-on time with Windows Mobile 7 . Here’s what he’s saying via Twitter: the OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There’s “a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks… for WM users it will be…

Inbrics M1 is the thinnest Android slider we’ve seen, probably everything we ever wanted

We don’t know what everybody else in the phone business has been doing lately, but Inbrics has just unveiled what looks to be the near-ultimate Android phone. The Inbrics M1 is a slider handset with a (great) 3.7-inch WVGA OLED display, 3 megapixel camera, front-facing VGA camera, 16GB of built-in storage, microSD slot and all the other usual trimmings, but what’s particularly stunning is that the phone is not only half an inch thick, but it has a full QWERTY keyboard that’s surprisingly clicky and typable. The phone is running Android 1.5 right now, but it should be up to Android 2.0 by the time it hits the market in March. The biggest concern is the 800MHz Samsung processor, the same chip that’s …

Mobile Industry Winners and Losers: 2010 Predictions

We enter 2010. Older, certainly. Wiser? Well, maybe. Much has happened this past year to change the face of the mobile industry. Mobile broadband has cemented itself as the route to global connectivity. Online Service Providers [OSPs] such as Skype, Facebook, and Apple’s iTunes store have emerged as the key challengers to mobile operators in applications and services. Now we are giving birth to yet another new generation mobile technology, christened LTE for “Long Term Evolution.” What labor pains will we suffer this time around? Continuing consolidation of the infrastructure vendor community points to the disappearance of further well-known industry brands in the coming years. By contrast, today’s mobile …

Apple’s ‘iSlate’ and other rumors that have given its stock a holiday boost

The Apple tablet rumors are at a fever pitch , yet again. Depending on what you’ve read, it’s all but confirmed that the company’s got a January 26th event scheduled at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, CA. All this, of course, with nary a word or comment from Cupertino HQ, and without the context that this trend has come and gone ad nauseam, both with the tablet and before with the years of lead-up to the iPhone. Here’s the latest bit: MacRumors has dug up information about a Delaware-based company, Slate Computing, LLC, that was founded in November 2006 and owns the trademark “iSlate,” the signatory of said trademark being Apple’s Senior Trademark Specialist Regina Porter. Given that Apple owns “iSlate” trademark …

Apple Expanding iWork In The Cloud?

A year ago Apple launched iWork.com in beta, which allowed users of their office suite of applications to publish documents online. It’s a light feature set compared to Google Docs and Office 10 – just viewing and commenting. But a job posting suggests Apple may be creating a true collaborative cloud based version of the iWork apps. The job posting popped up on CrunchBoard on December 22. Apple is looking for a mid level engineer to “be part of the core development team” and “engage in an area from design to development” of a new javascript rich internet application for the iWork team: The Productivity team (i.e. iWork) is seeking an energetic, highly …

How the Decade Was Supposed To Turn Out (Spoiler: Christopher Reeve Walking) [Y2k10]

“In the years since the new millennium, the world has seen such progress.” So begins a noted Super Bowl commercial from 2000 that milked the Christopher Reeve sympathy/inspiration angle to show how well an investment firm can predict the future. The commercial, for Nuveen Investments , which is still around, says rather general things about advancements in AIDS and cancer treatments, but some of its suggestions are more specific. For example, the opening shot shows that the New York of the future will have new skyscrapers. Yes. Sure. That was a pretty safe bet. Really, the more prescient thing would’ve been to mention the lack of certain skyscrapers. It’s notable, however, that the Twin…

Boeing 737 Splits in Two at Landing [Happy Ending]

Details are unclear at this time, but an American Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 plane split in two, overrunning the runway at Jamaica’s Norman Manley International Airport, in Kingston. One of the passengers’ description is frightening. The passenger declared that the landing seemed all normal. Everyone applauded when the Boeing touched down, after a very rough flight under heavy rain. Then they noticed the plane wasn’t stopping. A big noise was heard, and the whole structure started to break down as the oxygen masks dropped and all alarms went off. Another passenger declared that the plane starting to break right in front of her. Indeed, the plane split in two when it slid during the braking phase of the landing, ending …

Another Google Nexus One sighting, this time a wee bit more clear

How a phone given to thousands of employees still manages to be nothing more than an occasional blip on the internets continues to boggle our mind. This latest Nexus One / “Google Phone” sighting comes care of two Twitter chatters — @djrobrob and the less protected account of @phillm. It’s the clearest shot of the interface we’ve gotten, and given our previous go-to videos have been subsequently pulled, the best “motion picture” interpretation we’ve got — take a look for yourself after the break. Moodagent: Going iTunes Playlists one better

Topics: iTunes , iPhone , iPod touch , App Review , Music Moodagen t [ iTunes Link ] (free for now) puts a new spin on the iTunes Genius Playlist system. Instead of leaving it up to Apple to give you category based Genius Playlists, Moodagent, gives you some control over what songs will appear in a 25 song customizable playlist of your music. You are given 5 colored bars, each with an icon representing an aspect of music. The symbols didn’t make much sense to me, but by hitting an info button, I found that the icons represented, in order: Sensual, Tender, Joy, Aggressive and Tempo . I could have used a full explanation …
