Ericsson trials HSPA-LTE interoperability, we count 7 Gs in total

Since it’ll be eons until we enjoy the kind of 4G coverage that we’ve grown used to on 2G (and to a lesser extent, 3G), manufacturers and carriers are hard at work making sure that we’ve got a reliable way to interoperate for the foreseeable future — TeliaSonera, for instance, wants to swap out its customers’ modems for LTE / HSPA dual-mode versions once they’re available next year. To that end, Ericsson and ST-Ericsson are trumpeting that they’ve become the first to establish “LTE and HSPA mobility” in accordance with 3GPP’s Release 8 specification, which dictates this sort of stuff in a way everyone can agree on (that’s a good thing). Verizon’s naturally more interested in the CDMA handoffs that have already…

Xbox 360 Elegant Edition shows Microsoft how it’s done

You know, we’ve pretty much all been enamored with the Zune HD’s industrial design , but one unintended consequence for Microsoft was that it made its console look even more childish and toylike. It was inevitable, then, that a group of industrious Swedes would take up arms against this injustice and right the world with their Elegant Edition mod. Featuring three 120mm cooling fans, an aesthetic borrowed straight from the 1980s, and absolutely no shame about its bulk, this mod is cooler than the original in both the literal and colloquial sense. We’ll accept no arguments to the converse. Better still, if you’re willing to part with some cold hard cash, …

Prosthetic, robotic ‘Smart Hand’ has feelings, too

Researchers in Italy and Sweden have spent the last ten years developing what they call the “Smart Hand,” a prosthetic hand which enables feeling in its fingertips. The hand — which was recently wired up to a test patient through a surgical procedure — has four motors and forty sensors which are linked directly to the brain . In the surgery, the nerve endings of the patient were linked up to receptors in the hand, which allows for feeling in the fingertips of the hand, even though the hand is not really a part of his body. In the video after the break, you can see the greater precision and dexterity this hand allows for. Though the research still needs to be refined before practical use, …

Internet down for one hour in Sweden

Sweden’s .se sites were down for about one hour yesterday evening when a buggy update script was used. The exact reason is still being investigated, but it basically show that the domain name resolution and the routing system are the weak point of the internet. Domain name serving fixes can take a while to propagate and hours after the fix, many users were still unable to access their favorite sites. INQ working on Spotify-branded phone, possibly running Android?

While the Spotify music service continues to tease us US-bound folks from afar, there’s word of a Spotify handset now to make us even more jealous. The phone is apparently being built for Swedish provider Telia (Spotify already accounts for 35 percent of digital music sales in Sweden), and according to TechCrunch, INQ is building the phone. Interestingly, the last thing we heard from INQ about future plans was a forthcoming Android handset, and we also have a source that says that Spotify probably wouldn’t be placed onto a regular BREW-powered INQ handset, so the optimist in us would like to believe that this Spotify phone could be INQ’s big Android play — there is already an official Spotify Android app to make that whole process …

US wireless consumers pay the most, but do they get the most? (No)

The US seems to be leading in highest average monthly costs at $53 while Sweden and Finland record the lowest average at $11 for service costs. Interestingly, the US has only 83% penetration with 263 million subscribers while Sweden and Finland record 113% and 115% respectively for percentage of penetration with a combined 11.1 million subscribers. This is in contrast to the yearly outgoing minutes per capita which puts Sweden and Finland at 1714 and 2567 minutes while US records 1453 minutes. Given the very low averages for some countries, we guess that pre-paid plans might have been taken into account,

More Nikon D300s sightings in lead up to rumored July 30th announcement

Nikon’s D300s seems to be having a hard time staying out of the viewfinder of other cameras, as the DSLR has popped up both in a nondescript close-up shot and in the hands of the president of a Nikon distributor at a Nikon Club gather in the Philippines. Same observations as last time , from what we can tell it’s got the same body as the D300 but with holes that suggest a mic input below the logo, although we’ve seen hints of a SD card slot in previous leaks. As for when we’ll be seeing the official debut, Nikon Rumors has a pretty good track record when it comes to these things, and it’s reporting with…

Former Gizmondo exec Stefan Eriksson gets 1.5 year sentence, movie might now have ending

Will this be the final chapter in the infamous and incredibly entertaining tale of former Gizmondo head Bo Stefan “Fiery Ferrari Crasher” Eriksson? Doubtful, but with any luck it’ll serve as a decent thread to wrap up that optioned movie on his life . An Uppsala, Sweden District Court has sentenced the man to 1.5 years in prison for his most recent round of escapades , which include illegal threats, attempted blackmail, and robbery. Assuming he starts jail fairly soon, mark your calendars and place your bets, we’re expecting a whole new slew of comical misdeeds to hit the news feeds by March 2011 — and no, we still don’t think a new Gizmondo will be out by then. [Thanks, piraya] Filed under: Misc. Gadgets , Gaming , Handhelds , …

Pirate Bay fires its copyright-busting cannon at YouTube

Supposedly, the The Pirate Bay guys were found guilty in their recent trial in Sweden, and, supposedly, they got sentenced to a year in prison and had to pay $4.5 million in damages. But back in the parallel universe which happens to be the real world, they’ve appealed the verdict and could probably keep doing so for the next few years. So in the meantime they need to keep busy, and what better way to do this than start a new user driven video portal to take on YouTube, called, predictably, Video Bay , allowing users to post and share video clips without having to worry about copyright violations. Seems reasonable. It’s not like they need to attract any

Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena movie download service ready for June launch

Everybody’s getting into the mobile movie sideload business — just ask Samsung — and following an MWC unveiling earlier this year, Sony Ericsson is gearing up to launch movie content starting next month as part of its existing PlayNow Arena service. Direct on-phone downloads over WiFi or 3G would be awesome, but as most of these services tend to operate, PlayNow Arena will require that users select and download movies on their PCs, cable up their phones, and transfer the media the old-fashioned way, at which point they’ll be playable on the device for 90 days. You’ll be able to select from about 15 movies at any…
