What Rupert Murdoch Still Doesn’t Get About the Internet

Rupert Murdoch knows who’s winning the war between big media and the Internet. Unsurprisingly, it’s Rupert Murdoch. “Without content, the ever-larger and flatter screens, the tablets, the e-readers and the increasingly sophisticated mobile phones would be lifeless,” he proclaimed when News Corp. posted unexpectedly strong fiscal 2010 second-quarter earnings . “Devices and platforms are proliferating but this clever technology is merely an empty vessel without any great content.” Murdoch danced a lively jig for investors as he bragged about his company’s ability to thrive in the media tumult caused by the Internet. I’m not buying it. News Corp. may be getting a big lift from “Avatar” right now, but like any big media company, it still has a lot of learning, experimenting and…

uPrint 3D Printer Gets Faster But Still Can’t Print Time [3dPrinting]

If you’re a designer with a need for three-dimensional printing and $20,000 to spare, the uPrint Plus is right up your alley—it’s 33% bigger, 69% faster, and 40% more efficient than its predecessor. It may not play Daft Punk like the MakerBot —and it costs a whoooole lot more — but Dimension’s uPrint Plus is professional grade, small enough for desktop use and gives users resolution settings of either .010 inches or .013 inches and prints materials in nine colors. It’ll ship in March, hopefully by which time they’ll have figured out how to get me that 4D support I’ve been holding out for. World’s Best-Selling 3D Printer Line Expands Dimension uPrint Plus offers material colors, larger build volume, resolution …

The Ariel Atom, a $40K face melter

This thing is only 20,000 GBP or about $40K. It uses a Honda Civic R-Type engine with a supercharger. It clearly will kill you sooner than later, although because it’s a car you’re not dealing with the possibility of sliding under a truck. Amazing stuff. Here’s the product page. If you get one, do tell us what you think?

New Apple patent shows off universal iPhone/iPod dock

What you see above was taken from a patent recently filed by Apple for a universal iPhone/iPod dock of sorts. If you’ve purchased an iPhone or iPod you know that they come with a plastic dock adapter, well this product will do away with the need for that. The magic is in the base of the

HTC 2010 Product Roadmap Leak: Legends, Salsa, Buzz [Htc]

The folks at Android and Me have what is purportedly the product roadmap for HTC going into the new year. The five phones are divided into four product categories: Design/Lifestyle, Performance, Productivity and Social. Let’s dive in, shall we? In design/Lifestyle there’s the Legend and the Salsa, due out in March and June 2010, respectively. Then there’s the Performance line, populated by the Bravo and its 3.7-in. OLED capacitive touchscreen. The Social scene is comprised of the Tide and the Buzz, due out in April and May 2010. I think they’re social because they come with Twitter and Facebook onboard, which is what passes for being social with a cell phone these days…

MiKandi: The World’s First Porn App Store for Android [Android Apps]

The only reason VHS won over Betamax was because of porn. And HD DVD very nearly eclipsed Blu-ray (sorry to bring up bad memories) due to Sony’s reluctance to allow adult entertainment publishers onto its format. Now, Android’s 16,000 apps haven’t scared Apple yet, but an alternative app store that’s sprung up could see Apple’s prudishness be its downfall. MiKandi is a white label app store for free and paid-for apps, allowing developers to upload more content around their filthy apps—including YouTube tutorials if you’re so inclined. Asking developers “Maybe you’re feeling like your innovative juices are being squeezed by not having the screenshots or video you need to properly showcase and sell your product?” they promise not to restrict any app …

HTC HD2 capacitive stylus just around the bend?

Ah, ha! Remember that curious patent application that popped up from HTC back in mid-August? You know, the one dealing specifically with a “capacitive stylus?” If UK e-tailer Clove is to be believed, one of those very devices will soon be shipping for the wide-faced HD2 , though little else about the product is known. In fact, we’re told that “price, specification and availability” are still being confirmed, although a preliminary asking price of

V7 Natural Keyboard Review–Going For the Natural Approach

One of the interesting things about doing a review of a keyboard is that you automatically get the perfect metric for testing the product while writing the piece itself.  All you have to do is type the review up on the keyboard itself and then relate the experience. The V7 Natural comes with a series of

Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad still not available, maybe never will be?

Here’s a report mixed with a cold hard fact and some wild speculation. We’ll start with the factual bit: despite promises of an August unveil and November availability, and despite lots of leaks over the summertime, Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad MID tablet thing still isn’t upon us, and on top of that we haven’t heard a thing about it in months. The wild speculation relates to the question of why, with Silicon Alley Insider conveying a string of possibilities ranging from the likely (wildly escalating hardware costs making the product unprofitable) to the somewhat less likely (it’s waiting for Chrome OS…

IREX 8.1-inch DR 800SG e-reader now listed at Best Buy for $449

You know what happens when you realize your $399 price point can’t compete with the International Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook at $259? You jack it up by $50 and hope people view it as an ultra-premium product, that’s what. IREX’s DR 800SG e-book reader , which admittedly comes with a salacious set of specs and features, has just landed on Best Buy’s site as promised. The problem? It’s $449, and not the $399 that we’ve been hearing for a little while now. ‘Course, Best Buy has been known to inaccurately post MSRPs before the product actually hits the shelves (it’s …
