Keepin’ it real fake, part CCLIV: HTC Tattoo joins the WinMo gang, or appears to anyway

No matter how realistic a KIRF phone looks these days, there’s always a catch somewhere. For instance, this GSM handset is pretty much an exact clone of the HTC Tattoo , except for a couple of debatably important things: the suspiciously-cheerful $169 price tag, and the fact that Windows Mobile (and not Android ) is running the show. Oh, and it doesn’t end there: judging by the photo, you’d assume this evil clone runs WinMo 6.5 , yet the spec sheet mutters 6.1. A typo? Maybe. Something far more baleful? Maybe . A KIRF OS to go along with the KIRF hardware? Probably. That said, it’s hard to turn down a cheap phone that …

LG UX840 Triton Cell Phone Review–Versatile If A Bit Lacking

LG products usually do all right by me.  They’re not always jam-packed with features, but they do a passable job of supplying a decent phone. The LG UX840 Triton is a textbook example of LG at its most frequently seen. The LG UX840 Triton phone is a slider style phone with three hundred meg of onboard memory, GPS, a battery capable of two hundred and ten minutes of talk time, web browsing, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a three megapixel camera, speakerphone, calendar, world clock, alarm, stopwatch, calculator, currency converter, notepad and downloadable games. First, I love the versatility of this phone, seeing as it has both a trackpeg and a full QWERTY keyboard.  Call it irrational preference if you must, but I personally dislike…

Aliph launches Jawbone ICON bluetooth headset

Bluetooth headsets usually don’t look very exciting, but the Jawbone series is generally a bit more tasteful then a lump of plastic you stick in your ear. Aliph just launched their new ICON line, which adds some extra features to make their headset stand out. Jawbone ICON is considered to be one of the first of the so called “intelligent” headsets, featuring customization features that you’re not going to find in out products. You can customize the language, access buttons, and other features to access the parts of your phone that you want, rather then just a generic setup. The Jawbone ICON will be available for…

RIM patent app will have you barely browsing the web at incredible speeds

Let’s not mince words: any way you slice it, RIM’s built-in browser for BlackBerry renders sites about as well as your $199 netbook renders Avatar . The good news is that we’ve got every reason to believe the company recognizes the problem and is working to solve it — but on a completely unrelated front, they’re trying to speed up the process of fetching raw data off the interwebs, too. In a patent app made public this month, RIM’s lab geeks describe setting up a proxy server right on the phone that would intercept the browser’s web requests and bundle, compress, and send them to a gateway on the other end (BIS, we …

MightyMeeting Lets You Conduct PowerPoint Presentations From Your Smartphone

Last night, 200 entrepeneurs and investors from around Silicon Valley convened for the Founder Showcase , a quarterly startup event for seed stage companies that’s put together by Adeo Ressi’s TheFunded . The winner of the event, as voted on by the attendees is a new startup called MightyMeeting . MightyMeeting allows you to use your smartphone to host a PowerPoint presentation while you’re on the go, and also lets you manage your library of Office and PDF files from your phone. The application seems best suited for people who often have to give presentations at a moment’s notice, but don’t want to be chained to their desks. Here’s how it works: first, you upload your presentation files to the service, which supports PDF …

‘Superphone’ Is Arbitrary and Google Needs to Stop Using It [Rant]

Superphone. If you weren’t reading our liveblog of the Google event , it’s the term their Android team kept using to describe the Nexus One . But why ? It bugged us so much that I had to ask for clarification. After all, what kind of person makes up a new term for smartphones and expects other people to use it? I mean, c’mon right? Google’s official answer is that because of the 1GHz processor, the high amount of RAM, the Google apps and all the software innovations they’ve made in the Nexus One, the phone is one step higher than smartphones. And it’s almost equivalent…

Verizon getting Google’s Nexus One in Spring 2010

Oh boy, you heard that right. Google’s slinging its Nexus One to Verizon in the Spring for an undisclosed amount. At a purchase page that went live during the company’s product launch event in Mountain View, users are notified that the phone will soon be available on America’s largest carrier. Two things are immediately interesting here — for starters, it’s not coming (right away, at least) to bump heads with the iPhone on AT&T, and secondly, Google is openly suggesting that you buy Motorola’s (as in, not HTC’s) Droid now if you just can’t wait a day longer for some of that Android goodness. If AT&T wasn’t scared , it should be now. [Thanks to everyone who sent…

Six New Years Resolutions For Apple And The iPhone In 2010

Last night, as we waited for Carson Daly to tell us that it was time to make a lot of noise, I found myself laying on my buddy’s lawn with glass number one-too-many of something toxic in my hand. As I stared up at the stars, I pondered something I’d imagine most of the country was pondering as well: Does Steve Jobs make New Years Resolutions? I mean, really; outside of continuing to kick cancer’s ass and perhaps expanding his wardrobe, there’s probably not much that needs resolving in El Jobso’s personal life. His number one pet project (outside of …

AT&T asks FCC to phase out landline regulations

A day without landline phones? Some may say that’s inevitable, but it looks like AT&T is now starting to try to speed things up a bit, with it recently responding to an FCC request for comments with a 32-page filing that details its position on the matter. That more or less boils down to two major requests: that the FCC eliminate the regulatory requirements that it support a landline network, and that it provide a firm deadline for phasing it out. To back up that request, AT&T has provided the FCC with a whole host of statistics that paint a bleak picture for landlines, including the fact that less than 20%…

Android Finally Gets An Official Yammer App

Finally. Over a year after iPhone users got their native Yammer fix, Android has an official Yammer application available on Android Market. The application, while still fairly basic, comes with support for most of Yammer’s core functionality. If you use Yammer and you have an Android phone, you’ll want this app. We can’t link directly to the app because Google still hasn’t launched a strong web presence for the Market, but you can find it by running a query for “Yammer” from your phone. The new application is actually derived from the codebase of Yowl, a third party app for Android that Yammer acquired a couple months ago. CEO David Sacks says …
