Google’s Not Done Giving: Free Wi-Fi in Even More Airports

Google got into the Holiday spirit several weeks early. The search giant didn’t want to just give boring old toys or gadgets, though. No, when Google does something, it does it on a wide scale. Perhaps that’s why they gave holiday travelers the gift of free Wi-Fi in 47 U.S. airports and free Wi-Fi on Virgin America flights . The technology behemoth made clear today that it’s not done giving, though. Google has just added an additional seven airports in its free Wi-Fi program. They are: Washington-Dulles, Washington-Reagan National, Phoenix, Columbus (Ohio), Albany, Boise, and Asheville (North Carolina). Don’t forget: in addition to free Wi-Fi, Google is also matching donations made in these airports to Engineers Without…

A trip around town with Traffic Live from Navigon

Topics: Analysis / Opinion , Software , iPhone , App Review I’ve already reported on the updated Navigon iPhone app, [ iTunes link ] and noted that live traffic info was now included as an in-app purchase. I’ve spent the last 2 days driving around town testing it, and it works as advertised — but perhaps in not as many places as I would have hoped. Here in Southern Arizona, there were very few traffic updates, so I set a destination for Phoenix and had lots of information. Clearly, Navigon is not always sourcing information from smaller U.S. cities. As a comparison, I tried the traffic info built into my car nav system, and it displayed 9 nearby traffic incidents, some as close as 4 miles away. At the same…

Video: Phoenix Instant Boot BIOS starts loading Windows in under a second

Phoenix is showing off a few interesting things at IDF, but the real standout is their new Instant Boot BIOS, a highly optimized UEFI implementation that can start loading an OS in just under a second. Combined with Windows 7’s optimized startup procedure, that means you’re looking at incredibly short boot times — we saw a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10. It’s pretty slick stuff, and it should be out soon — check a video after the break. There’s more to starting a cable company than just pirating DirecTV

Blame it on the economy, lack of common sense, or lowered aspirations, but it seems like an awful lot of you guys think it’s a good idea to re-sell DirecTV “on the sly,” as they say in the business. Hell, this morning alone no less than two items have come across our desk to this effect — and you know as well as we do that if both John Metzler, the owner and operator of Phoenix Communications and Pine River Cable in Michigan, is reselling premium digital channels, and if four unnamed Haysi, Virginia residents have also thought of it, then it’s a growing concern. Our advice? Just don’t do it. You don’t want to be like OJ , do you? Didn’t think so. Read - DirecTV Sues Virginia…
