MightyMeeting Lets You Conduct PowerPoint Presentations From Your Smartphone

Last night, 200 entrepeneurs and investors from around Silicon Valley convened for the Founder Showcase , a quarterly startup event for seed stage companies that’s put together by Adeo Ressi’s TheFunded . The winner of the event, as voted on by the attendees is a new startup called MightyMeeting . MightyMeeting allows you to use your smartphone to host a PowerPoint presentation while you’re on the go, and also lets you manage your library of Office and PDF files from your phone. The application seems best suited for people who often have to give presentations at a moment’s notice, but don’t want to be chained to their desks. Here’s how it works: first, you upload your presentation files to the service, which supports PDF …

Apple Expanding iWork In The Cloud?

A year ago Apple launched iWork.com in beta, which allowed users of their office suite of applications to publish documents online. It’s a light feature set compared to Google Docs and Office 10 – just viewing and commenting. But a job posting suggests Apple may be creating a true collaborative cloud based version of the iWork apps. The job posting popped up on CrunchBoard on December 22. Apple is looking for a mid level engineer to “be part of the core development team” and “engage in an area from design to development” of a new javascript rich internet application for the iWork team: The Productivity team (i.e. iWork) is seeking an energetic, highly …

Motorola to show “whats next” at CES

The rumor mill has been cranking way too hard over Motorola as of late for us to feel confident in taking a stab at what they may launch, but Motorola has just more or less confirmed that they’ll be launching something at CES. Got any guesses as to what it is? Drop it in the comments. We’ll come back on January 7th, run through all of them, and pick someone at random from those who got it right and send them a box of fun stuff we’ve got laying around the office. Sugar on a Stick OS goes to 2.0, gets Blueberry coating and creamy Fedora 12 center (video)

It didn’t take long for Sugar on a Stick, the OLPC-free version of the Sugar OS, to go from concept to bootable , and it’s only taken a few further months to go from that first version, called “Strawberry,” to this twice as fruity “Blueberry” flavor. Updates are evolutionary here, with a core built on Fedora 12 and Sugar .86, adding in Gnash for Flash support as well as a suite of new apps. Most notable is the recently released Open Office 4 Kids, a streamlined version of the suite that probably won’t be great for squeezing every character of your resume onto one page but should be good enough to spread a 500…

IE Vulnerability Heads Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday List

Next week will be a busy one for IT administrators. Microsoft plans to release six patches for December’s Patch Tuesday — three rated critical and three important. The patches will address 12 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office. “To help customers plan for their deployment of these updates, I want to specifically call out that they touch all supported versions of Windows and IE,” said Jerry Bryant of the Microsoft Security Response Center. “On the Office side, the bulletins impact Project, Word and Works 8.5. All of the updates for Windows will require a restart, so please plan accordingly.” Patching the IE Flaw At the top of the list for IT administrators — and at the top of Microsoft’s deployment list — is a vulnerability…

You Don’t Need a TiVo Anymore [Rant]

This chart of TiVo’s slipping subscriber numbers may be surprising, seeing as TiVo is the television recording device (and it’s so good), but it’s something we’ve seen coming for a while. We love you TiVo, but you’re fast becoming obsolete. The typical TiVo user is a person who just wants their TV recordings to work, regardless of the monthly fee. They may or may not be tech savvy, but chances are TiVo was their first DVR—since we’ve found, anecdotally, people gravitate back to the first DVR interface they use. So why is their marketshare down to 2004 levels? The answer is simple: cheap DVRs from providers are eating TiVo from the low…

TV on the Go Leaves a Little To Be Desired

You have to really love TV to spring for a portable TV like the FLO TV Personal Television I’ve been testing. While you can already “snack” on live and pre-recorded mobile TV offerings on some cell phones, this brand new FLO handheld is a dedicated television you might schlep in addition to a phone. FLO’s pitch is that you can use this stand-alone digital TV to keep you and the troops entertained on the go. You might watch on the bus or train to the office. You might pass FLO TV to the kids in the back seat during a lengthy trip. Heck, you might even watch it in the bathroom or prop it up on your …

T-Mobile UK employees caught peddling personal data

Here in the states, T-Mobile has been no stranger to screw-ups , but we’d always just figured that their UK counterparts were stand-up guys. After all, they’re British – as we all know, every one from that side of the pond is charming, affable, and rocks a bloody good accent. Unfortunately, it looks like not everyone employed there is as scrupulous as their customers would hope – a story by the BBC has confirmed that T-Mobile UK employees sold private subscriber data to a third-party broker. T-Mobile UK and the British authorities have been taking steps to handle the incident, with the Information Commissioner’s Office going as far as trying to stick offenders with a…
