New Iron Man 2 Trailer Has Enough High-Tech Gear To Make Your Head Spin [Iron Man]

At first it’s similar to the first one , but then the new Iron Man 2 trailer turns into a mess of new footage, battle suit armies, suitcase armor, and some hot chick firing a palm gun. Wowza! You can hit up the Apple link for the trailer in its full HD glory, but be sure to come back here so we can talk about how amazing Ms. Johansson and all those slick battle suits look. Are Netflix Discs Going to Kill Me? [NetFlix]

If I were to tell you that Netflix sleeves and discs were hotbeds of contamination and disease because they were handled by so many people from delivery to DVD player, you know what I’d be? A filthy liar, that’s what. This is the exact opposite of Netflix discs, which are actually quite clean, comparatively speaking. You see, those red sleeves and the delectable range of DVDs they contain are relatively free of any funky viruses or deadly bacteria, this according to an interesting slow news day report out of KLTV 7 East Texas . As part of the report, six Netflix discs and sleeves were sent to an infectious disease expert at the…

Canon EOS 7D impressions for filmmaker wannabes

Chad Mumm is our video producer at Engadget, doing work on The Engadget Show and filming shorter-form stuff when we need it. He recently acquired the 7D for personal and work use, and we asked him to put together some thoughts on the camera in terms of using it primarily for video. You can check out our traditional review roundup for the 7D here . These times are strange. Five years ago if you walked onto the set of a movie, TV show, or music video — before you got kicked out by a strung out production assistant — you’d have probably seen a bustling group of workers huddled around a giant camera …

Why are we so attracted to disaster movies like 2012

Here’s another topic I’m stealing from Ron and Fez : disaster movies. We sorta discussed this a few times already , but the movie 2012 broke all sorts of records at the weekend. I’d make a big stink about Americans having zero taste, but if I could make $80 zillion per movie sleeping through my lines like the cast of 2012 presumably did, you can guarantee I’d be right there alongside them. That aside, the topic on the radio show was this: what is it about disaster movies that make people so excited? There’s a few theories. The one…

Blockbuster kiosks to offer movies on SD cards, you some candy as you checkout

Blockbuster’s been trying all sorts of, um, innovative things to get more foot traffic in its stores, but thanks to a dastardly invention known only as ” Netflix ,” that very task has proven exceptionally difficult. Now, it seems the flagging movie rental company is giving one more far-flung idea a whirl: movies on SD cards . Around six Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores will soon begin offering titles on SD cards, though the included DRM only allows customers 30 days from the purchase date to view it, and once it’s fired up, you’ve just 48 hours before it vanishes completely. Each rental will cost $1.99, and while we definitely see the benefit of renting something that you don’t have to return, we’re still skeptical …

Netflix hints at Watch Instantly integration on ‘already-popular device’

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 may call itself the only console to stream Netflix , but all that could be changing — and soon. As Netflix continues to pull in new subscribers (and cash flow) like it’s no big deal , the company is apparently looking to spread its wings even further by integrating its wildly popular Watch Instantly feature into “a device already owned by a large number of consumers.” Naturally, the most fitting candidates for that would be Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Nintendo’s Wii , though the company has yet to come forward with anything concrete. Just so know you, Netflix credits the Xbox 360’s streaming integration as the main reason some 2.4 million …

Disney announces new DVD Killer technology

I love companies like Disney. They seem to think that just because they want something some way, it’ll happen. Take for instance their latest scheme. Instead of allowing you to “buy” their movies on DVD, Blu-ray, or even VHS, they are going to allow you to buy access to their content. Disney doesn’t want you to pass your treasured copies of their movies on to your children, or sell them at garage sales. Oh no… they own that property, and expect to be paid for it without it being loaned, traded, or sold on the secondary market. The Wall Street Journal reports that Disney’s new…

Python amphibious car costs a bomb

Want to make it out like those super cool spies you see in the movies? The Python amphibious car ought to fit the bill - after all, it not only looks good enough to drive and carry your harem around, whenever you’re stuck at a dead end with a lake in front of you, all you need to do is rev the engine and jump right inside the lake, letting the conversion process ensure you will be able to cruise to the other side of the lake in a jiffy. It will be powered by a Chevy Corvette V8 engine to make sure there are enough horses underneath the hood when you need them (all 640 of them!) alongside a Dominator Jet for your water-based forays that pumps around 500 hp onto…

Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ Review: An HD Video Decoder That Actually Works [Review]

Seagate built this second-gen FreeAgent Theater+ to be equally Mac and PC friendly, and to decode any video file you throw at it, regardless of resolution, framerate or other variable. Despite a crappy interface, the mission is a genuine success. The Price $150 without drive; $290 with 500GB drive included. The Praise As I mentioned, the video decoding on this is better than anything I’ve ever seen in a $150 box. The Theater+ is very comfortable with HD video, not only because of its HDMI output but because when I dumped some QuickTime 1080p movie trailers on a drive and docked it, the trailers played back without…

Netflix Launches Second $1 Million Search Contest

Netflix on Monday announced the winner of its $1 million search contest. Just moments later, Netflix launched a new million-dollar challenge to encourage engineers, computer scientists, and machine-learning communities to keep working on improvements. After three years and submissions by more than 40,000 teams from 186 countries, Netflix awarded the $1 million prize to the team that most improved the Netflix movie-recommendation system. Specifically, the teams set out to improve upon the company’s ability to accurately predict Netflix members’ movie tastes by 10 percent — a hurdle Netflix scientists were not able to overcome on their own over the last decade. Netflix cofounder and CEO Reed Hastings said…
