Freescale’s tablet coming soon?

With the iPad, came this surge of the tablets, and one of the most inexpensive ones will be this Freescale. Freescale’s 7-inch tablet was first brought on display at CES last January, and it is able to run on Android, Chromium OS, and Linux. Unfortunately, there isn’t much that we have on this guy, just a video after the jump. Source Related Posts Freescale Semiconductor looks good, and cheap. See you at CES 2010? Smartphone Sales Up 24 Percent, iPhone’s Share Nearly Doubled Last Year (Gartner)

Last year, Apple’s iPhone nearly doubled its worldwide market share of smartphone sales to 14.4 percent, up 6.2 points from the year before, according to the latest market share figures put out by Gartner. The iPhone still trails behind Nokia’s Symbian-powered smartphones (No. 1), which saw their share decline 5.5 points to 46.9 percent, and RIM Blackberries (No. 2), which gained 3.3 points to end the year with a 19.9 percent share. Remember, these are worldwide estimates. In the U.S., both Blackberry and Apple are much larger than Symbian . And when it comes to mobile Web traffic, Apple and Android dominate with 81 percent share. According to Gartner, Android phone sales…

XBMC 9.11 ‘Camelot’ now available for download, huge changelog in tow

Frankly, we haven’t heard much noise coming from the XBMC camp in quite some time. All that changes today, as the project has just launched its latest major update in v9.11. The so-called Camelot build is now available for download on Windows, OS X and Linux, with the most notable changes including a revamped user interface, DirectX support by default in Windows, a “complete reorganization of the settings menus, automatic video information extraction, and smoother video playback.” You’ll also find updated scrapers, expanded remote control support and updated codecs. Tap that source link for the download and condensed changelog — though, we should caution you that the live installer seems to be causing issues for some, so try and stay positive, okay?…

You Can Blame The French Military For Any Problems With Thunderbird 3 [Emails]

If you use Mozilla Thunderbird as your email client, you’re in good company, as not only does the military use it, but they also contributed code to the latest Thunderbird 3. Alright, so it’s the French military… With 80,000 computers in the military using it, the French government thought it imperative to adapt it to their needs—which Mozilla evidently liked, as they included some of their code in Thunderbird 3, which launched this week. David Ascher, Chief Executive of Mozilla Messaging, explained: “The primary changes (the military) have made allow them to know for sure when messages have been read, which is critical in a command-…

Why Mozilla’s Deal With Google Gets Ever Shakier

The successful rise of Mozilla’s Firefox browser is one of the most storied tales of the open source community. Despite the browser’s success, however, Mozilla remains hugely financially dependent on Google — possibly perilously so. While some people don’t realize it, Mozilla makes the lion’s share of its revenues from Google . In fact, more than 90 percent of Mozilla’s revenue comes from search-related deals, and in Google’s case, that’s in exchange for a search box in Firefox that steers users of the browser into Google’s lucrative search-and-ad ecosystem. Mozilla’s deal with Google is set to expire in November 2011, and there are good …

Targus debuts ACP51USZ laptop docking station with video

Well, it’s not quite as seamless as something like Zemno’s $500 DeskBook Pro docking station , but Targus’ new ACP51USZ model is a good deal cheaper, and will likely get the job done just fine for most folks (with a few exceptions). That includes giving you a reasonable four USB 2.0 ports (two suitable for charging devices), a single DVI port for your monitor, an Ethernet port, and a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks for speakers, headphones, or a microphone — all of which connect to your laptop with a single USB cable. Unfortunately, this one won’t work (or at least be fully functional) with Mac or Linux, but…

Google Chrome hits beta for Mac and Linux, extensions available for extra-smug Windows and Linux users

At long last Mac and Linux users don’t have to feel like second class citizens in Chrome land : they’ve got official beta versions of Google’s browser to call their own. Of course, people have been running the open source Chromium version on both sides of the fence for ages, but beta brings with it a new level of stability and officialness. Google is also finally launching extensions for Chrome, which is available for the Windows and Linux versions of the browser, and with Mac compatibility on the way. There are already 300 extensions available, not a bad start, and hopefully a good indication of the sorts of added functionality we’ll be able to stuff into Chrome OS with the help of a seemingly-excited developer community. [Thanks to …

Google Officially Launching Chrome Extensions Next Week

A couple weeks ago, Google unveiled its Chrome Extensions site after clues began popping up that a full-on push for extension support in their browser was imminent. Unfortunately, that site was only meant for extension developers who were allowed to upload their creations to Google. On the page, Google promised that end users who were looking for these extensions would have a way to do so “soon.” That will happen next week, we’ve learned. Two sources close to the situation say that Google plans to unveil its Extensions Gallery at some point next week, probably in the middle of the week. This makes sense since Add-on-Con 09 , a conference devoted to browser add-ons, is taking place next Friday…

Department of Defense Buys 2,200 PS3s to Upgrade Supercomputer [Military]

Apparently the Department of Defense believes that PS3s are a better value when it comes to supercomputers than IBM products specifically designed for the purpose. Granted recent price drops probably didn’t hurt in justifying a 2,200 console order either. This isn’t the first time that the DoD is using PS3 consoles for supercomputing. In fact, these 2,200 units are going to be added to an existing Linux cluster of 336 PS3s used by the United States Air Force . According to Justification Review Documents, the purchase is all about getting the best value out the DoD’s budget: With respect to cell processors, a single 1U server configured with two 3.2GHz cell processors can cost up to $8K while two Sony PS3s cost approximately $600. Though a single 3.2 GHz…
