iPhone devsugar: Unit testing for iPhone view controllers

Topics: Apple Unit testing refers to a software validation methodology that allows programmers to test individual program units for correctness. It’s been an ongoing question in the iPhone developer community as to whether the iPhone’s view controller class is testable or not. In response to these discussions, iPhone developer Jonah Williams has written up a view controller unit testing how-to over at the Carbon Five web blog. His write-up offers examples that show how to incorporate some best practices into your code. Williams points out how broken NIB bindings are a common problem for iPhone OS applications. To address these issues, he regularly adds simple assertions that…

WTFJeans Have Specially-Fitted Pockets For USB Sticks and iPhones [Apparel]

HTC may think the Nexus One shouldn’t go in pockets , but WTFJeans has enough pockets for every gadget you own. Except your laptop. Or your fax machine. iPhones and iPod Touches can be safely contained in the micro-fiber insulated pocket, which has been measured and cut just right so it doesn’t move about, bumping up against your set of keys like it’s a buxom girl at an R&B night. There’s also a special hidden pocket for a USB stick—though as I usually carry around at least five in my handbag, along with a micro and miniUSB cable, I think I’d need a few more …

iPod Touch explodes in classroom

Remember when people were complaining about their laptop batteries spontaneously combusting? Well, it would appear that the iPod Touch battery is capable of the same ability. Apparently, some kid at Pentucket Regional High School was trying to fix their iPod Touch, and was “rubbing wires against the battery, which became very hot, then exploded”. I suppose that there is a lesson to be learned here: don’t go futzing with your iPod like this. Macworld 2010: Twicular’s Grocery Pal

Topics: Software , iPhone , iPad When I was young, my mother spent Sunday mornings with grocery store flyers, a pen, and a pad of paper. Once she had identified the best weekly deals, she’d send my dad to buy some items from Grocery Store A, some from Store B and so on. Barclay Jiang has devised a convenient, contemporary solution to the same problem. His free app for the iPhone and iPod touch, Grocery Pal , uses GPS (or Wi-Fi location) to find all of the grocery stores in your area (you can adjust the range of search) and downloads the current sales. From there, you can generate…

But Does It Play Doom II RPG? (Yes, Yes It Does) [IPhone]

A skeptic might see the Doom II RPG ($4, iPhone/ iPod touch ) as a lame reboot of the Wolfenstein 3D RPG which was a lame reboot of the original Doom RPG. And…wait…that’s kinda true. How absolutely soul-crushing. [ iTunes via Kotaku ]

Dual Electronics’ iPod touch GPS cradle now shipping in late February

Well, it’s quite a ways off the November 2009 launch date the company initially promised, but Dual Electronics is now saying that its XGPS300 navigation cradle for the iPod touch will really, honestly be available sometime in “late February.” The price presumably remains at the same $179.99 as before, which also includes a bundled NavAtlas navigation app and, of course, an adjustable windshield mount. Not exactly the easiest sell, to be sure, especially considering how much the GPS market has changed in just those few short months. Dual Electronics’ iPod touch GPS cradle now shipping in late February originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 31 Jan 2010 00:31:00 EST. Please

Gaming Faceoff: Nintendo DS vs. Sony PSP vs. iPhone/iPod Touch

The convergence of social media and gaming is becoming harder to deny. The domination of the FarmVille Facebook game , the blockbuster acquisition of Playfish by EA , and the rise of the iPhone as a gaming platform immediately come to mind as examples of social media’s impact on the game industry. The latter especially interests us. In September, Apple SVP Phil Schiller shared some interesting stats on the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming platforms. While the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP had 3,680 and 607 games respectively, the iPhone app store had over 21,000 different games. You may not think it, but the iPhone and iPod Touch are gaming forces to be reckoned with. That’s why gaming is the subject of this week’s Web Faceoff , where we…
