79 percent of adults believe web access is a ‘fundamental right’

The BBC World Service has conducted a poll of more than 27,000 adults across 26 countries to answer one primary question: is internet access a fundamental human right? We can skip right past Finland and Estonia who’ve already made laws to that effect , and take a look at what the other nations thought. Mexico, Korea and Brazil lead the way here with all having greater than 90 percent agreement, while Pakistan, India and Kenya — countries with a slightly different perception of what fundamental needs are — offer the least support, though they’re all still above 50 percent in agreement. Other interesting stats include the claim by 85 percent of Japanese internet users and 81 percent in Mexico that they would not be able to “cope…

FCC: Cost is the Biggest Barrier to Broadband Adoption in the US

FCC has a report on broadband adoption in the US, based on a survey of 5,005 Americans in October and November 2009. The report found that 78 percent of adults are Internet users, and 65 percent of adults are broadband adopters. It then divides users who haven’t got broadband into four groups. The Digitally Distant make up 10 percent of the general population; this is the group that simply doesn’t want to be online. The Digital Hopefuls make up 8 percent of the population; they’d like to be online but lack resources to do so; many don’t have a computer and/or don’t know how to use one, and cost of computer and broadband connection…

How the Internet Changed Writing in the 2000s

In a famous passage from Ulysses , James Joyce recapitulates the development of the English language in 45 pages — from the archaic and formal (“Deshil Holles Eamus”) to the conversationally casual (“Pflaap! Pflaap! Blaze on”). Over the past decade, as more people have spent more time writing on the Internet, that same evolution has not only continued, it feels like it’s accelerated. With so much discussion about how the Internet is changing journalism and media, there’s surprisingly little said about how writing itself has transformed. But it has changed in a dramatic if subtle way. Nine years ago, I remember being one of 100 or so journalists gathered to listen to a veteran writer speak. I don’t remember the topic, just that when he asked how many of …

Top 10 MobileCrunch Posts of 2009

Ever wonder what stories of 2009 the people of the Internet found most interesting? I can’t really help you there, but I can tell you which stories on MobileCrunch got the most pageviews. Now, you might assume that most of our popular stories involved the iPhone, but — well, actually, you’d be right. The iPhone isn’t alone on the list, of course; Android makes a handful of appearances amongst our most popular stories, including one that I never would have seen coming. Smartphone Showdown: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid : It was the battle of the century – or at least the battle of the year. Our final call may not have been decisive, but at least it was exhaustive. Tutorial: How to Tether on an iPhone 3G …

Last week in our Web Faceoff series, we took a look at one of the newest forms of web communication: the Twitter retweet . This week though, we’ve decided to look at one of the oldest: email . Email has been around in one form or another since the 1960s, before the Internet was even born. Today, it is the most crucial tool for communication online. There are thousands of tools for email now, but this week we’re specifically pitting desktop email vs. webmail by having you vote between Google Gmail and Microsoft Outlook . iPhone Now The Most Popular Phone In The US

Ranking cell phone companies is a tough thing to do. Some of these companies have a bunch of popular handsets, whilst others have just one or two yet manage to sell as many or more. Rank the companies by cumulative sales across all of their lines and the results will swing one way; rank them model-by-model, and they might look completely different. Such is the case with the iPhone, according to the latest numbers from The Nielsen Company. While RIM’s marketshare with their BlackBerry line is still nearly double that of Apple’s , the iPhone has now surpassed everything else to become the most popular phone in the US. The iPhone’s lead is fairly tight, coming in at…

Samsung to follow up the ultra cheap Corby with the even cheaper Corby Pop

Samsung already managed to get the Samsung Corby down to a surprisingly dirt-cheap price tag, packing in a 2.8″ touchscreen, 2 MP camera, and FM radio for less than $200 bucks — unlocked, and without contract. It seems that wasn’t enough, however – according to the latest whispers from the rumor mill, they’re aiming even lower. According to Unwired View , Samsung’s cracking away at a new uber-cheap handset called the Corby Pop. There aren’t any pictures of the Corby Pop yet – in its place, please accept this picture of a ham sandwich. The new handset purportedly maintains the touchscreen…

Another Reason Why I Wish All My Friends Had iPhones: Blipr

I’ll say it right off the bat: there are tons of ways people can communicate from iPhone to iPhone, not in the least by simple SMS or, you know, calling each other. Then there are iPhone applications like Skype, eBuddy and Nimbuzz that allow you to call and/or IM your friends over the Internet waves, sans extra carrier charges. Here’s another fun one to add to the mix: Blipr ( iTunes link ). When you install the free app, you get a unique BliprID that you can share with your friends. Using that ID, your iPhone-carrying friends can add you to their contact list once they’ve downloaded and installed the software program from the App Store…
