HTC HD2 breaks free in the T-Mobile USA wilds

HTC’s HD2 is a near perfect combination of physical hardware and silicon that delivers impressive performance on a device that’s surprisingly sleek given the display’s massive 4.3-inch exapanse. Even Microsoft’s much maligned Windows Mobile 6.5 is expertly masked by HTC’s Sense interface. So it’s easy to understand the anticipation felt by the HD2’s first US release, questions of a Windows Phone 7 OS upgrade path notwithstanding. T-Mobile has the release honors and is now showing the HD2 as “coming soon” in its phone inventory. We’ve also got the first “in the wild” shots courtesy of TmoNews showing that big Blockbuster shortcut linked front…

Android 2.1 for Droid Eris leaks out

We’ve already seen a broken build of Android 2.1 for the Droid Eris slip out accidentally , but now the full package is available for installation courtesy of the fine folks at xda-developers. We haven’t tried it ourselves, but we’re told it’s working fine, and that snazzy new version of Sense is apparently quite snazzy and new. Of course, you’re risking your phone and all your data if you try this, so the absolutely smart and prudent move is to wait for the official update , but do let us know how it goes if you’re daring enough to load it up, okay? Update: And just like that, it’s been ported to the Sprint Hero , although not everything works quite yet. You be careful, …

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCLIV: HTC Tattoo joins the WinMo gang, or appears to anyway

No matter how realistic a KIRF phone looks these days, there’s always a catch somewhere. For instance, this GSM handset is pretty much an exact clone of the HTC Tattoo , except for a couple of debatably important things: the suspiciously-cheerful $169 price tag, and the fact that Windows Mobile (and not Android ) is running the show. Oh, and it doesn’t end there: judging by the photo, you’d assume this evil clone runs WinMo 6.5 , yet the spec sheet mutters 6.1. A typo? Maybe. Something far more baleful? Maybe . A KIRF OS to go along with the KIRF hardware? Probably. That said, it’s hard to turn down a cheap phone that …

Verizon launches FiOS Mobile Remote app for Droid and Imagio

Controlling your TV from your phone isn’t a new concept , but Verizon just made it a bit sexier. Verizon FiOS owners this week can nab a new FiOS Mobile Remote app for their Motorola Droid or HTC Imagio . The application emulates regular remote buttons, but also tosses in an icon-based favorites view of channels, in addition to an ability to sling photos from the phone to the big screen. The phone hooks into your FiOS box over your local WiFi, and requires you to download a widget for the set top box as well to get everything synced up. We’re not exactly sure why this …

HTC Desire listed for €419 at Amazon’s German portal

Curious as to what HTC will be charging for its Sense-enabled Desire ? If Amazon’s German portal is to be believed, it’ll go for a cool €419 ($572). Of course, the site doesn’t give any indication as to when it’ll actually ship to those that order, but it is clear that Amazon is doing the selling and not some third-party merchant. Just under six Benjamins for a souped-up Nexus One ? You know you’re in for that. [Thanks, Lars] HTC Desire listed for €419 at Amazon’s German portal originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Feb 2010 16:53:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

HTC Friend Stream Adds Social Aggregation to Sense UI

Besides showing off the Desire , the Legend and the Windows Mobile-based HD mini, HTC also showcased a new version of its Sense UI (available only on the new Androids, and not on the HD mini), which has several very cool features. One of them is Leap, which lets you check out several home screens at once in a nifty grid. Besides Leap, I’ve noticed some new widgets and several minor improvements. For example, the browser now has a very nice way to copy and paste, as well as to check out dictionary definitions for a word. The feature I liked the best, though, is the Friend Steam. It takes all the social elements…

New Nexus One ROM leaks, fixes more radio issues?

Remember that hand-waving trick that got a Nexus One to give up the 3G ghost way, way too easily? Well, we don’t want to pop the champagne just yet, but there’s a new non-over-the-air firmware update floating around that includes yet another radio bump among its sundry features, suggesting HTC isn’t quite done yet tuning this thing to get proper HSPA without freaking out from time to time. Whatever this update is, it may never see the official light of day in its current form — it includes Google Maps 3.4, for one thing, while Google’s already gone ahead and upped the ante to 4.0 for Buzz support — but at least it seems engineers aren’t done trying …

Android 2.1 coming to HTC Hero in “mid-March”

Hot on the heels of the speculation that the Motorola CLIQ would be getting Android 2.1 next month, HTC has announced that one of their flagship devices, the HTC Hero , will too be getting the 2.1 treatment next month. If you’re a loyal reader, you probably already know that HTC has been cookin’ this update up for some time now but has yet to release an official date. Now, we still don’t have an exact date but we do know that Android 2.1 will be coming to the HTC Hero in “mid-March”. This update, of course, will sport HTC’s critically acclaimed Sense UI. When an exact date…

HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 pegged for mid-March

We’ve known for ages that HTC’s been working on yanking its custom-skinned Hero off of Cupcake’s rusty frame, but so far, the only way to drop Android 2.0 or 2.1 on your phone has been to cheat, root, and load a custom or leaked ROM in place of the official first-party firmware. If you’re too straightedge for that, though, keep the faith — your binary isn’t too far off. PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in “mid March” according to HTC’s Benelux team, and it’ll feature a new Friend Stream widget that aggregates user updates across services (presumably a nod to Blur )…
