AT&T Finally Gets Android: Motorola Backflip Hits March 7 [At&t]

AT&T is late to the Android games, but they’re making up for lost time with five Android handsets in the first half of the year. First up: the Motorola Backflip , coming March 7th for $100 with contract. Wait… $100? To me that seems a little steep, but I guess that’s because I’m not the biggest fan of Motoblur, Motorola’s social UI. The Backflip also has a touch panel on the back, though that doesn’t function as anything more than a D-pad, along with a 3.1-inch hi-res screen and a 5MP camera (with flash) on board. It’s also compatible with AT&T’s speedier 7.2 HSPA 3G network. Most importantly: if you’ve been stuck in an AT&T contract and worrying that the Android grass is greener, you’ve …

Qik to come preloaded on the Samsung Omnia II

We like to keep an eye on the adoption of mobile video broadcasting applications around these parts. It’s a mighty competitive space, with Qik , Kyte , Flixwagon , UStream and a number of others all taking a stab at what is essentially the same idea. While the idea as a whole has yet to really take off as something that everyone does, its one that just about everyone seems to appreciate once it’s explained to them. Therein lies the challenge: how do you tell people that such services exist? One approach is to get it on the handsets right out of the box. If it’s hard to get them to come to you, why not go to them? The only one of the lot we’ve seen …

Sony Ericsson already working on second version of Xperia Pureness, possibly Xperia Pureness 2?

Electric Pig is reporting that Sony Ericsson ’s already working on a followup to the Xperia Pureness . The designer of the original handset, Daniel Mauritzson, says that the second version of the Pureness will pack even fewer “features” than its predecessor, to hone in even further on the contrast between the handset and available smartphones. There’s also been some murmuring of removing the buttons, apparently — which makes us wonder if the next Pureness might not just be a four-inch long piece of black plastic we’ll only be able to pretend to make calls on. Regardless, it sounds like the next Pureness is only in the …

Is Verizon’s data network down? [Update: California Only]

We’re not sure how wide spread it is ( Update: seems to only be effecting California. ), but I’m seeing a whole lot of reports that Verizon’s 3G data network is down in various parts of the country. The majority of the reports seem to be coming out of the SF Bay Area and South Bay. While the handsets are reporting full 3G signal, no data seems to be piping in our out. Might the success of the Droid in the Silicon Valley have tipped things over, a la AT&T’s iPhone woes? We’ve got a note into Verizon, so we’ll update once we get official word. In the mean while, go ahead and drop a comment and let…

Samsung Corby Bluetooth Headset

Everyone has heard of the Corby series for the mobile phone and as most products, expect a new set of accessories to come out. Nissan to license Scratch Shield paint to NTT DoCoMo

Nissan’s Scratch Shield paint is currently being licensed to NTT DoCoMo as the latter wants to use the former’s technology in their cellphones. This self-healing paint supposedly self-heals fine scratches and can restore the vehicles’ paint surfaces overnight, while more severe cases might take up to a week or so. Apart from that, the Scratch Shield paint is also more scratch-resistant compared to conventional paint, resulting in a more durable and long-lasting paint coat. This would make us less careful with our handsets in the future, and it doesn’t bode too well for phone case manufacturers who are currently making tons…

LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010

It’s looking like LG will be offering an Android phone boasting Qualcomm’s hot Snapdragon chip — which has recently squeezed its way into handsets such as the Xperia X10 and Acer’s Liquid . The new LG mobile phone is expected for the Korean market in the second quarter of 2010. While the device is still unnamed and specs are still a mystery, LG is promising that the device will be “more mature” than the GW620 Eve , an Android device announced earlier this week for Rogers in Canada. There’s no solid word on what availability of the device will be like, though LG says its considering possibilities outside of Korea. Surprise! iPhone Users Love Their Phones, Hate Their Network

Bring a magnifying glass if you’re looking for surprises in a new study from CFI Group. The market research firm has just released the findings of a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. smartphone users that holds true to form: iPhone users love their devices but hate AT&T’s network; Verizon Wireless operates a rock-solid network but lacks high-end handsets; and consumers — not business users — are driving growth in the space. Apple’s ubiquitous phone fared well in CFI’s study, with 92 percent of iPhone users claiming they own “their ideal smartphone,” and the device scored highest in terms of user satisfaction with applications. Android-based handsets and the…

AT&T begins rolling out MMS for the iPhone

A few hours ago, we got a tip from one of our readers that they’d popped into their iPhone messaging app this morning, only to find that they’d suddenly gained the ability to send MMS. We chalked it up as a fluke – AT&T promised it would launch on September 25th, after all, and they haven’t exactly been punctual about this whole thing thus far. Two whole weeks early? It seemed shaky. Then a few hours later, we got another one. So far, we’ve received three tips, all from entirely different people, all claiming that MMS has sprung up on their iPhones sans jailbreak or any other sort of hackery. Being the curious folks we are, …
