Firefox Account Manager Aims to Make Your Social Life Easier

What do you do when you first fire up your browser? Most probably, you log into various sites that require a username and password – Facebook, Gmail, Twitter and the like. For me, personally, it’s quite a chore, as I need to log into over 10 different services before I start doing anything. Now, Mozilla sets out to alleviate this issue with a new Firefox plugin called Account Manager. It currently doesn’t do much; it recognized that you’ve signed in into a website and displays an icon that says that yes, you’re indeed signed up under that username. However, Mozilla has ambitious plans …

The Slow Death of a Social Network

A few weeks ago, when News Corp’s digital chief, Jon Miller, fired MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta and replaced him with Co-presidents Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn, I decided it was time to write the social networking site’s epitaph . The recent exodus of executives and technical talent has only bolstered my belief that MySpace is nothing more than a carcass of its former self. In fact, it’s been rotting away for the past few years, as these charts illustrate. The first graphic shows the comparison between Facebook and MySpace. The Johnny–come-lately controls 74 percent of the social networking market, according to data collected…

Monica Keller , a MySpace Group Architect who has played a key role in advancing MySpace’s initiatives in activity streams and openness, is leaving the company to join Facebook. Keller announced the news in a blog post this evening. She will be joining Facebook as an Open Source and Web Standards Program Manager, where she’ll be joining a team that includes David Recordon and Luke Shepard . The 7 Somewhat United States of Facebook

Peter Warden, a former Apple engineer, likes to analyze data — so much so that he started scraping public profiles and photos from hundreds of millions of Facebook accounts about a year ago, and now has data collected from more than 200 million around the world. He wrote a fascinating post recently on his personal blog about what that data shows about how interconnected (or disconnected) users in the various American states are. The graph below is reprinted from that post, with Warden’s permission: In a nutshell, Warden’s data analysis showed that Facebook users in the U.S. can be roughly segmented into seven regions, which…

What Is This Mysterious Facebook Music App?

Facebook Music may not exist, but you may have it installed anyway. Right now if you log into the site and go to Facebook’s “Edit Applications” screen, you’ll probably encounter a new application at the top of the list: Music . And it’s pretty clear that this isn’t just some third party app; the application links to Facebook.com/music, which is the same format used by other official Facebook applications, including photos (Facebook.com/photos) and events (Facebook.com/events). But the application doesn’t work at all — clicking it just brings you to your Facebook News Feed. We reached out to Facebook about the mysterious application. They’ve directed us to a Facebook Music Player app that appears …

National Lady Gaga Day Draws 100,000+ on Facebook

More than 100,000 people on Facebook have declared today National Lady Gaga Day . It’s difficult to be sure what this day entails exactly, but presumably elaborate costumes will be part of it. Point is, it’s gone sort of viral. Gaga is everywhere now. Student Sarah Jane Elliott founded the Facebook event, and as we’re writing this post 105,147 have RSVPed as confirmed guests. There are 14,398 “Maybes.” The day is described as an opportunity to “dress like her, sing, dance, have themed parties, wear a kermit the frog jacket” and “celebrate our ‘inner freak’ that Gaga allows (and wants) us to be.” While the event started on Facebook, it doesn’t end there. We’re seeing a bunch of …
