Moodagent: Going iTunes Playlists one better

Topics: iTunes , iPhone , iPod touch , App Review , Music Moodagen t [ iTunes Link ] (free for now) puts a new spin on the iTunes Genius Playlist system. Instead of leaving it up to Apple to give you category based Genius Playlists, Moodagent, gives you some control over what songs will appear in a 25 song customizable playlist of your music. You are given 5 colored bars, each with an icon representing an aspect of music. The symbols didn’t make much sense to me, but by hitting an info button, I found that the icons represented, in order: Sensual, Tender, Joy, Aggressive and Tempo . I could have used a full explanation …

Laughably large Red Light Camera Detector proves that you should just drive safely

Just a hunch here, but we get the feeling that you’ve gone one step too far when you decide to install a red light camera detector in your vehicle that’s larger than a) your GPS unit and b) the bag phone you used between the years 1991 and 1994. For those bold enough to disagree, there’s the wild and wacky device pictured above, delivered to you by none other than Hammacher Schlemmer . Packing an internal database of 6,000 red light and speed cameras across the US and Canada, the GPS-enabled device also boasts a 1.6-inch OLED screen to show your position in relation to upcoming cameras, and of course it’ll belt out all sorts of warnings to help you…

Five Apps for the Gastroenterologist

Topics: Cool tools , iPhone , App Store , iPod touch , App Review Sometime this summer a wiseacre commenter (we get a few) suggested we do a “Five Apps” for a variety of somewhat offbeat topics. One wasn’t so far-fetched however: gastroenterologist . One could say that a gastro doc has about the same needs as any doctor, of course, and that’s an easy out. So here are 5 apps that are great for gastroenterologists and possibly any medical specialist… Coming soon: 5 apps for the lemur owner. Epocrates Rx - This free app looks up drugs and is updated weekly. Epocrates [ iTunes link ] has already been available for other mobile platforms for a while, this is a must-have for physicians, I would think. There’s also a Pro version …

Twitter Application Database Goes Up for Sale

Want your very own Twitter applications database, listing 450 sites and add-ons that work with Twitter? You might be in luck. Twtbase , one the 15 Twitter databases we reviewed in our January 2009 article 15 Twitter Directories Compared , is up for sale on the Digital Point forums. Back in January, we made the following key points about the service: Overview: Similar to Twitdom, Twtbase also houses their database of applications within Wordpress and divvies them up into either the web, mobile, desktop, or browser plug-in buckets. What you might like: The thumbnail view. Each application has a screenshot, displays current rating, and number of votes. Twtbase…

Coming To Android This Summer: Kyte, Rummble and Google Books

Always nice for a reporter to bump into a developer who builds mobile applications for startups and gives you a live preview and details of yet-to-be-announced stuff. No worries, he has permission to talk about the apps (he thinks). The man I’m talking about is Julián Moreno from development house Droiders , and him and his team have been hacking away at some fine apps for the Android platform. I’ll start with the most exciting one imho: Kyte , the live video streaming enabler, is making its way to Android next September, likely marking the first entry of its kind on the platform. It will enable you to stream whatever you’re shooting with the built-in …

Opera Unite: Web Browser Becomes the Web Server

Opera has had great success with their mobile browsers, but when it comes to the desktop, their growth hasn’t been phenomenal, despite the fact that Opera, at times, has been the fastest and/or (arguably) the browser with most features. Today, they’re unveiling a new feature which will go live in Opera 10, that might finally give Opera the attention it deserves: Opera Unite . In a nutshell, Opera Unite is a web server within a web browser. Instead of just browsing the web, Opera now lets you share files and photos, communicate with other users, chat, and host your web site directly on your own computer. Some …

According To Twitter, You’re All Using Their Website To Tweet Your Hearts Out

Few users seem to have noticed this, but apparently Twitter is no longer appending the correct application that was used to update user streams at the end of each message. Everything is marked as coming “from web”, even if the message was actually sent out from a desktop client, third-party web or mobile application. Here’s the kicker: after some digging, I found that the company has learned about this issue a couple of days ago but decided not to fix it in order not to disturb the engineers during the weekend: “With all the recent increase in Twitter API developers and ease of registering an OAuth application, we’re seeing …

Twitter: “We Screwed Up” on #fixreplies

In a commendable move for the company, Twitter has done what it needed to do today: posted an apology for its poor communication around the “#fixreplies” issue. Earlier this week, an optional Twitter feature was removed for being “confusing”. But after a user backlash, Twitter seemingly changed the story to say there was a technical limitation making the feature unsustainable. In an admirably frank and honest blog post, Twitter founder Biz Stone explains that his first post should have mentioned the technical issue in addition to the product design problem, and says the issue was that he wrote the post too hastily. For those not wishing to read the full explanation, the short of it is: 1. Twitter has a technical issue that prevents…

Real World Bento: the formidable, personal database

Topics: Software , Productivity , Reviews It suddenly occurred to me that my needs for software have changed. It was while I was browsing for a native Mac application for monitoring weight loss that I realized that little out there would suffice if it couldn’t sync with my iPhone. While there are several popular online sites for tracking diet and exercise, I wanted something that would sync with my Mac and that I could maintain from both my desktop and iPhone without having to go through a third-party website. I didn’t find that hoped-for software, but I did discover Bento…
