Windows Mobile 7 roadmap elucidated, starts with MWC 2010 demo

You know, January is all but expired now. Gone are the heady (or is that headless ?) days of CES 2010 , and we’re nearly past the rumor euphoria of the decade , so what do we have to look forward to? According to CNET ’s sources, WinMo 7. This year . Sure, we heard as much from DigiTimes , but it’s always good to put a more legitimate source to what is quite the juicy forecast. Confirmation that Microsoft is planning to finalize all code by this summer also meshes with an earlier leak of an LG Windows Mobile 7 handset set for a September release , while the latest Pink phone rumors are also reiterated. At any rate, it all kicks off in Barcelona come February…

Personal Sidekick data mostly recovered

Last week we told you that due to server problems, T-Mobile had lost almost all of the personal data stored on Sidekicks everywhere. Today, we have some brighter news whih Microsoft’s Roz Ho tells us about below: We are pleased to report that we have recovered most, if not all, customer data for those  Sidekick customers

T-Mobile offers Sidekick users olive branch, $100

We’d heard T-Mo was thinking about doing more for Sidekick customers who’ve had their data wiped by Microsoft / Danger / Hitachi’s botched server upgrade , and we just got a statement confirming that any affected customers will be getting a $100 gift card for their troubles in addition to that free month of service. T-Mobile also says that recovery of “some” lost content may be possible, but we’re not holding out hope — and if we’d just been shafted like this, we’re not sure we’d want to buy even more stuff from Team Magenta. Full statement after the break. The T-Mobile Sidekick data failure, and what it means to iPhone users

Topics: Analysis / Opinion , Enterprise , Odds and ends , Internet , MobileMe You may not have heard about the recent loss of data for T-Mobile Sidekick users; after all, this is an Apple-focused site and there probably aren’t as many Sidekick owners out there as there are iPhone users. I’ll explain the situation, and how it could happen to anyone depending on cloud-based data stores for their mobile devices. The Sidekick is made and supported by Danger, which since April of 2008 has been owned by Microsoft. As such, all of the personal information on the Sidekicks was stored on servers owned and operated by Microsoft. During the…

When Cloud Fails: T-Mobile, Microsoft Lose Sidekick Customer Data

If you ever wondered what would happen when a cloud service fails, then you don’t have to wonder much. Earlier today customers of T-Mobile and the Sidekick data services provider, Danger, a subsidiary of Microsoft lost access to all their data. There are some who believe that this data wipeout is because of a botched upgrade. Why it happened matters little to those who are unlikely to get their data back, according to a note posted on T-Mobile forums . Regrettably, based on Microsoft/Danger’s latest recovery assessment of their systems, we must now inform you that personal information stored on your device…

T-Mobile Sidekick Disaster: Danger’s Servers Crashed, And They Don’t Have A Backup

Wow. T-Mobile and Danger, the Microsoft-owned subsidiary that makes the Sidekick, has just announced that they’ve likely lost all user data that was being stored on Microsoft’s servers due to a server failure. That means that any contacts, photos, calendars, or to-do lists that haven’t been locally backed up are gone. Apparently if you don’t turn off your Sidekick and make sure its battery doesn’t run out you can salvage what’s currently stored on the device, otherwise you’re out of luck: Microsoft/Danger is describing the likelihood of recovering the data from their servers as “extremely low”. T-Mobile Sidekick users have been suffering from a major outage all week, and that issue

Turtle and Pure Pink Phones May Be Just Next-Gen Sidekicks [Rumor]

Cnet’s Ina Fried says the Microsoft Pink phones leaked yesterday are “more the evolution of the Sidekick” using Windows Mobile as the core OS, and in addition to Microsoft’s main phone push. What’s interesting is the reason Microsoft bought Danger. It’s because Danger was all about cloud services for their phones, and Ina hears that they’ll be a big part of what Microsoft’s doing with phones overall. If Windows Mobile 7 is the core, as Mary Jo Foley has reported , the phones won’t launch until WM7 does, at the very earliest. Either way, it’s clearly somebody’s busy over in Microsoftland. Exchange support coming to Sidekick LX 2009 today for $4.99 a month

If you’re a kid stuck in a grown-up’s body, there’s a good chance you’re pining after a Sidekick — you know, just like the kind you had back in the day when you listened to Blink 182 and loitered on your skateboard around the plaza in front of the office building that has since enslaved you. Problem is, Sidekicks have never really been work-friendly devices — owing in part to their utter shunning of Exchange — which means you get stuck with a BlackBerry and an incessant desire to swivel the display. It’s kind of sad, really, and passers-by think you’ve gone mad as you sit on the park bench pressing your thumb desperately against a screen that will never, ever rotate, no matter how fricking hard you press…

Hands-on: T-Mobile Sidekick LX (2009)

Now that I’ve had a few hours to get acquainted with the new Sidekick LX , I figured some preliminary comments were in order. My overall impression of the Sidekick LX is still positive, but I’ve found a few things to nitpick about. So, without further ado, here we gooooo! Screen: It’s absolutely brilliant and hands down the best screen available on a mobile handset today. The closest thing to it right now is the BlackBerry 8900 and to some extent the BlackBerry Bold . Keyboard: The Sidekick has always had the best QWERTY keyboard on the market and the 3G LX doesn’t falter one bit. Keys are bit harder than previous models, but I’m knocking out…
