CrunchDeals: Buy two, get one free Xbox 360 Platinum hits

Oh, winter snowstorms. Your lion’s roar is but a cat’s meow provided you don’t knock out the power or prevent the UPS or FedEx trucks from completing their routes. If you do knock out the power or render delivery services immobile, then you’re an asshole. An asshole of a storm. If not, please feel free to continue canceling school and work for everyone (except bloggers and other work-from-home professionals) while we all play video games. Long story short (too late) if you need Xbox 360 games to play, Amazon’s doing a buy-two-get-one-free deal on Platinum Hits titles. …

Should Nintendo fear the Apple juggernaut?

These days, when people aren’t talking about the Apple Tablet , they’re talking about how Apple’s next target is the Big Three gaming companies. The iPhone will topple them! iPhone is a revolutionary gaming device! Well, certainly a little optimism is warranted; the iPhone has inarguably changed the landscape of mobile phones, personal media players, and to a lesser extent personal computers. Why shouldn’t Apple extend its holy sovereignty to gaming? It already has, in fact. But Apple has come kicking and screaming the whole way. The iPhone, you understand, was not meant to be a gaming device, and in Cupertino, Apple’s intentions are paramount. Apple could never accidentally create a …

Virtual pinball machine looks cool, may be missing flippers

A virtual pinball machine sounds like a really good idea. No less then 17 tables, on a LCD display (so the playfield doesn’t wear out). Best yet, the virtual pinball machine has some of the most famous Gottlieb games like 2001 and Gold Strike. Sure, it’s expensive, but compared to the cost of actually buying 17 pinball machines? It’s quite reasonable. And takes up a lot less space in the ol man cave. The Multispin Digital Pinball machine uses a 32 inch LCD monitor for that play field, and a smaller monitor mounted on the back glass to replicate the scoring section of those classic games. There is just one thing that makes me nervous, and that’s the lack of flipper buttons on the pictures of the machine…

Dear Valve, where is Episode 3?

Sometimes less is more. In the case of a fan comic recently posted to Valve’s forums, it definitely raises a valid question. Where on earth is Half-Life: Episode 3 ? When Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, it was met with critical praise and great sales. Since then, two episodes have been released, the aptly titled Half-Life: Episode One in 2006 and Half-Life: Episode 2 in 2007. Both titles were extremely well made, though a bit short in nature, to the dismay of the fans. Since then, we’ve heard very little. Valve has worked steadily on other projects (like Team Fortress 2 and Portal ) but many have wondered what has become of…

NES guitar: Now you’re playing with power, indeed

If only there were some way to hook this up to D-Pad Hero , then the circle would be complete. As it is though, it’s merely a fully functional electric guitar made from a Nintendo Entertainment System. Wait a second, that’s totally awesome. Actually, what really needs to happen is the guitarist from The Advantage needs to rock this thing. I think I would die from a nerd overload if I saw him jam out the Castlevania theme on this thing. I met those guys at a show in Tokyo, incidentally, and they’re cool as hell. The project is actually an updated version of an much older NES guitar, updated with Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong knobs and a cartridge for the headstock. [via…

Attract Mode, an indie gaming goods store

If you’ve been wondering where you can put your chiptunes, indie gaming zines, and Tetris ice cube trays all in the same shopping cart, look no further. Attract Mode is a brand new online store dedicated to old-school and indie gaming and the culture associated with it. It’s only just starting out, so selection is pretty limited, but there’s still some cool stuff, including a CD from my pal Leeni as well as some sweet art and shirts. [via TIGsource ]

The rest of you can stop making Big Daddy costumes now

Because this guy’s sewed it up pretty tight. Working drill, platform diving shoes, nuts, bolts, and everything. To the creator of the costume: that’s pretty savage, man. I guess you do this stuff for a living, but still, this sucker is something we can all be proud of, professional or not. If you’re curious (or jealous), take a look at the detailed step-by-step he’s posted . I have a feeling a lot of previous costumes sacrificed detail and accuracy in the name of lightness and maneuverability, but Harrison won’t have any of that. Those little sisters look a little older than the ones in the game. I guess it’…

250GB Xbox 360 revealed in South African ad: the “Super Elite”

Confirming what we saw yesterday on Amazon.de , there is indeed a new 250GB model of the Xbox 360 called, disappointingly, the “Super Elite,” unless that’s just what this particular South African retailer decided to go with. Forza 3 , two controllers, no HDMI cable. Seriously? at this point, I should be getting HDMI cables in my Multi-Grain Cheerios. Oh, there is one wrinkle. The advertisement has the price at 4200 Rand, which translates to… about $550. Let’s hope that’s just the local price. Okay, that’s just alarmism. Based on the pricing we’ve seen here in the states, this model should be $400. [via Joystiq ]

CrunchDeals: Sims 3 for $30

Whether you love the Sims franchise or not, the PC version is $30 (today only). That’s $10 off just about everywhere else. My particular household is in a love/hate relationship with the game. I hate that I get sucked into it and my wife loves to make fun of me for playing it. A typical conversation usually goes as follows… Wife: What’s this game? Me: The Sims. Wife: How does it work? Me: Well I have this little person I control and I have to make sure he goes to sleep when he’s tired and eats when he’s hungry and stuff like that. Wife: What’…
