Macworld 2010: Twicular’s Grocery Pal

Topics: Software , iPhone , iPad When I was young, my mother spent Sunday mornings with grocery store flyers, a pen, and a pad of paper. Once she had identified the best weekly deals, she’d send my dad to buy some items from Grocery Store A, some from Store B and so on. Barclay Jiang has devised a convenient, contemporary solution to the same problem. His free app for the iPhone and iPod touch, Grocery Pal , uses GPS (or Wi-Fi location) to find all of the grocery stores in your area (you can adjust the range of search) and downloads the current sales. From there, you can generate…

But Does It Play Doom II RPG? (Yes, Yes It Does) [IPhone]

A skeptic might see the Doom II RPG ($4, iPhone/ iPod touch ) as a lame reboot of the Wolfenstein 3D RPG which was a lame reboot of the original Doom RPG. And…wait…that’s kinda true. How absolutely soul-crushing. [ iTunes via Kotaku ]

iPhone Finding App Better Suited As Whistle-Activated Whoopee Cushion [IPhone Apps]

“Where Is My Phone” is a clever little app designed to help you locate your misplaced iPhone simply by whistling. But I think we can agree that there are better uses for whistle-triggered sound effect playback than finding your phone. Turning your iPhone into a remote controlled whoopee cushion is what I had in mind. Little Worlds, the makers of the app, apparently also had it in mind, including more than one variety of fart among the dozen or so sound effects included with the download. Here’s what’s going on: “Where is my Phone” listens for your whistle and then plays the sound effect of your choice (or your own recorded soundbite) when…

Peek gets a Facebook app, sort of

Peek devices are usually quite resolute in their single-purpose ways , but it looks like things are starting to change — the company is beta testing Facebook integration called PeekSocial. Once you install the app on your Facebook account, you’ll be able to update your status easily, and you’ll also receive periodic emails that pull content from your newsfeed. Yeah, it’s a little hacky — how about enabling support for a real Facebook app, Peek? [Thanks, Devon] Peek gets a Facebook app, sort of originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 27 Dec 2009 19:33:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Google downsizes AndroLib’s Android Market app count by a few grand

A stout 20,000 apps in the Android Market, eh? Not so much, according to none other than Google itself — which, with all due respect to original counter AndroLib — has a little more street cred here, especially when they’re deflating the numbers rather than inflating them. A spokesperson for the company told us this afternoon that “there are currently more than 16,000 free and paid apps in Android Market” without specifying paid-to-free breakdown or differences among regional Markets, so we don’t much basis for figuring out where Google’s number comes from; we’d count it ourselves, but we’ve… uh, we’ve got dinner plans this evening. So until someone can conclusively prove otherwise, we’re going to say that the Market has yet to crack the 20K mark in any region where the …

Motorola’s Got Their Own Android Shop Cookin’ [Android]

Well, lookee’ here. Motorola’s been building their own Android Marketplace , and someone found it out. It’s been taken down since, but here’s what Android and Me found before Moto pulled the plug. The biggest addition is that it’s web based. That’s right, Android users. A store that’s easily browsable on the desktop. Not to mention an application for desktop app management. So that’s all well and good, but why does Motorola have to even build a separate portal? This is all stuff that Google should really be on top of if they want to really win consumers over. The last thing that …

The App Store’s Biggest (Official) Hits Of 2009 [IPhone Apps]

A lot of people spend a lot of time reviewing and comparing apps, so there’s no shortage of critical information to guide your purchases. But what do iPhone and iPod Touch users actually buy? Here’s the leaderboard for 2009. Games The bestseller list is populated by high-profile—either in name or in publisher—listings, none of which are too surprising. The list, it seems, it sorted by revenue, because there’s a relatively poor showing for cheap casual games. Nothing in the top six is below $5, and they’re all franchise titles. The top rated list, however, is more heartening. The fantastic Spider: The Secret of Bruce Manor tops the group, joined by a healthy selection of games from a…

Molinker is no more on the App Store — ratings scam results in expulsion

Well, here’s the happy side to the police state known as Apple’s App Store . One of the more prolific app makers out there, Molinker, has been recently unceremoniously expelled from the Apple orchard due to its manipulation of app ratings and reviews. As it turns out, Molinker has been massaging the truth by pumping out false five star reviews for its wares, and now Phil Schiller himself has stepped in and pulled the company’s whole catalog — consisting of more than 1,000 apps — seemingly permanently: Yes, this developer’s apps have been removed from the App Store and their ratings no longer appear either. So the App Store is now a bunch of travel guides lighter and Mr…

Super Mario Bros iPhone App Makes Your Life a Mario Level [IPhone Apps]

iRwego, a sort-of-cleverly named iPhone app, may not have a very long lifespan, since it’s not approved by Nintendo. But I hope it stays—it soundtracks your life as if it were a Mario game. The idea is to put it in your pocket, and the accelerometer will detect your movements and play the appropriate Mario sound effect. Jump, and it’ll make the distinctive Mario jump sound; crouch, and it’ll make the “worp worp worp” sound as if you’re entering a green pipe. Also included are brick hits and Goomba-stomping, among other noises, tunes and a few choice
