Stainless steel iPhone case protects your precious

Still carrying your iPhone in your pants pocket eh? Well, I guess you can do that. Be careful if you sit down though, you might end up with a pocket full of broken dreams and unicorn tears. Well, unless you have this pretty sweet stainless steel iPhone case. Hand made in Portland Oregon by a person who obviously knows industrial design, this seriously stout case is hand finished and made from high grade steel. The case is custom cut with a flip cover, including space to show the time and date, as well as allowing you to answer the phone without opening the case. The designer even…

What type of phone should a George Costanza buy?

As luck would have it, I’ll be in the market for a brand-new phone in the coming weeks. Terribly exciting, yes. But there’s a bit of a problem: the two “biggest” phones out there, the iPhone and all those Android-based ones , rub me the wrong way. Longtime readers will know that I’m fairly neurotic, sorta like George Costanza from Seinfeld. Does the phrase Jerkstore mean anything to you? That’s 100 percent me. (Yes, the irony in linking to Google-owned YouTube is not lost on me.) So what’s a person to do when, for reasons I’ll…

Video: The HTC HD2 might not run Windows Phone 7, but it can run Windows 95!

We know what you’re thinking. “Man! Now that Microsoft has confirmed (and re-confirmed ) that the HD2 won’t be getting an (officially endorsed) upgrade to Windows Phone 7, I can only hope that it will some day be able to run a desktop OS from fifteen years ago !” Well, friend, that day has come. The always incredible folks over at XDA-Dev have successfully managed to get Windows 95 up and running on the QEMU virtual machine emulator. Stuff like this generally runs slow as dirt, but coupled with the HD2’s 1ghz processor, there seems to be enough

57% of workers use their smartphones in the bathroom. Also, 57% of workers are nasty.

Are you mysophobic? Oh, you don’t know what “mysophobic” is? It’s a fancy way of saying “germaphobe”, which, according to scientists or linguists or some other group of academics, isn’t actually a word. Go figure. Now, I ask again: Are you mysophobic? No? Well, you might be after reading this. Because it’s naaasty . CareerBuilders did a survey of 5,200 mobile workers (that is, people who primarily work on the road), and found that their cell phone habits are generally dangerous, a bit rude, and pretty friggin’ gross. Some of the more notable stats revealed: 62% check their phones while eating – Eh, whatever. I get bored while I&#…

Your smartphone: future air-quality data point

You know the good feeling you get when you think about how your computer is running Folding@home all the time, or that you’ve been careful to clip six-pack rings all your life? Well, soon you might have one more warm fuzzy feeling, if this project underway at Intel Labs Berkeley comes through. They’re designing portable air-quality sensors that monitor and sample the air around you throughout the day and allow it to be shared and analyzed later. The current sensors are a little bigger than a phone, but one “long-term” plan is to use mobiles as sampling points ; just write an app, add a sensor to the …

Video: Samsung explains why their Super AMOLED screen is better than your normal AMOLED screen

Samsung’s pretty proud of their Super AMOLED technology – and why shouldn’t they be? With next to no fanfare, they managed to knock out the readability issues that plagued AMOLED handsets any time they were within view of the sun. And if vastly improved readability wasn’t enough, they went and slimmed the whole thing down into a package considerably tighter than the competition’s not-so-sun friendly offerings. Samsung’s compiled a nifty little video showing off all the reason why their Super AMOLED displays deserve their name. Interestingly, they left out any sort of audio track. Come on, Samsung – this is 2010. We’ve been nursed by booming bass, and embraced by endless loops. If it doesn’t have a …

Want to sleep with Android? Now you can.

Do you love Android? Like, really love Android? So much so that those Android action figures just don’t seem like enough ? Well, now there’s a way for you to show the world how much you really care about your favorite OS: by bringing it to bed with you. Now, now, get your mind out of the gutter (There are no intentional innuendos anywhere in this post. Honest!). Etsy seller Craftsquatch has just started churning out the Android-themed throw pillows you see above for $19.99 a pop. If you want one of these, you may want to act fast for two reasons: A) it’s Etsy, so its handmade, thus inherently being limited edition and B) we’re guessing that, unlike the …

Xachi Pets fuse iPhones and Stuffed Animals into one Cute and Cuddly iToy

What do you get when you mix a Unicorn and a Nexus One? I’ve got no idea – but if you put an iPhone and Furby together, you get a Xachi pet. Announced last week at the American International Toy Fair , a Xachi (pronounced “ZAH-chee”) Pet is an iPhone-controlled toy. It looks kind of like a Furby with a giant LED screen in place of its face. And, yes, you interface with your Xachi Pet through your iPhone/iPod. It’s pretty a simple concept, but it’s the first time I’ve seen someone pull it off. The closest thing to an iPhone-enabled toy on the market is a helicopter with your iPhone as a remote control…

More Shots of Microsoft’s Project Pink “Turtle” and “Pure” leak out; hitting Verizon on April 20th?

We’re still trying our darnedest to not feed the hype machine surrounding Project Pink, considering that all signs are indicating that neither phone is anything to get worked up about. With that said, a couple of new shots of the Turtle (the stout, portrait sliding QWERTY handset) and the Pure (the horizontal QWERTY handset pictured above) have just leaked out, along with some information about its impending launch on Verizon . According to the tipster who leaked the shots below to Engadget , Verizon is tentatively scheduled to launch one or both of these phones come April 20th. There are also whispers of a Vodafone release, though no date for that was given. Last but not least, the tipster verified that the Project Pink phones will be aimed …

More BlackBerry slider photos for you, guv’nor

It looks a little bit better than it did before when it’s in focus, and with a Bold for comparison. Click for the high resolution version, or head over to BlackBerry Leaks for the rest. People are falling over themselves trying to decide whether this is going to be Bold-branded or Storm-branded. I see no reason why they shouldn’t launch as a whole different line — a tweener model. I mean, you’ve got keyboard-on- face , you’ve got no keyboard, and now you’ve got keyboard- underneath . What could be a clearer three-pronged attack on the mobile world? A budget Bold, a sweet all-purpose Storm 3, and then something in between, for wafflers. Lots of wafflers out there.
