Thwart laptop thieves by shutting off your wi-fi

Most of us don’t think twice about lugging a $2000 object to a public place and then leaving it for five minutes to grab a coffee refill — with no other assurance that it won’t be stolen than that there are other people around. I’ve started being a bit more careful since laptop theft has gone up around here, but it’s just as easy to forget that laptop rustlers don’t just hang out in cafes. And if they’re savvy, they may even employ wireless signal trackers to pinpoint the location of laptops hidden under car …

“This means something:” Why the magazine industry is suddenly crowing about tablets

Whenever companies do something inexplicable, the nerd in me always comes back to that scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind when Richard Dreyfus keeps building models of a mountain, culminating in a huge, muddy mess in his kitchen. Throughout it all he keeps saying “This means something.” Well, the latest molehill into a mountain is the move by Time Inc. and Conde Nast , among others, to build a tablet-based interface for their flagship titles. This means something, but what it means is that the homes of Time and Gourmet (oh, wait), aren’t going to take the coming industrial disruption lying down. While I don’t think their…

Can India “Jugaad” Its Way To More Angel Investing?

There was one complaint I heard over and over again from Indian entrepreneurs during my three weeks shuttling between Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune: There aren’t enough angel investors in India. Now, truth be told, that’s a complaint I also hear in the American heartland, in Canada, in Europe, in Africa, in China and, well, pretty much everywhere I’ve traveled to over the last few years. I’m not sure people ever feel they’ve got enough money being thrown their way. But there is definitely something that makes Silicon Valley and Israel different from almost everywhere else I’ve been. Both have a wide base of people who made lots of money in the late 1990s …

Kohjinsha’s futuristic dual-screen notebook

Maybe it’s just me, but this dual-screen notebook Kojinsha started selling in Japan today [JP] looks very futuristic (and very cool) to me. The main selling point is that you get not one but two 10.1-inch LCD screens in a compact body (size: 280×210×19〜42mm, weight: 1.84kg). And you can even buy the DZ6KH16E, which looks like a normal notebook when you use just one of the screens, if you live outside Japan. The two sliding LCDs feature 1,024

Palm Pixi Review

When the Palm Pixi first appeared in May, there was a lot of excitement about an affordable Web OS device with a slim and sexy design. By the time Pixi had arrived to Market, a deluge of Android phones lead by the Motorola Droid and the powerful iPhone 3GS had been released. Android 2.0 and Motoblur feature functionalities that are close to Palm’s Synergy, while the Pixi lacks WiFi. At a street price, as low as $25 (with a new contract), the Pixi is cheaper than the Palm Pre or the Droid, but when you take into account the total cost of ownership ($69/mo + tax + fees for two years) the savings are rather small. What do you really get with the Palm Pixi? Find out!…

Free Wi-Fi Internet for UK town

A major Wiltshire town is abuzz with excitement as they are about to become the first in the UK where its residents will be able to enjoy free public wireless internet access. According to the Swindon Borough Council plan for all 186,000 citizens, they will soon be under a blanket “Wi-Fi mesh” by the time April 2010 rolls around, with no connection charge while line rentals are, well, free. The service will be known as Signal, but you will have limited access unless you fork out some dough to enjoy 20Mb upgrades. Said fee is touted to be “significantly less” than current broadband suppliers though. Permalink: Free Wi-Fi Internet for UK town from Ubergizmo | Hot: Motorola Droid Review

Say Hello to Devicescape Wi-Fi for Nokia, Android

Devicescape is hoping to meet smartphone users’ increasing demand for Wi-Fi access by broadening support for its Easy Wi-Fi Network to include Nokia and Android-based handsets — beyond currently supported platforms such as iPhone OS, Windows Mobile, Windows and Mac OS X. Given Nokia’s impressive worldwide footprint and Android’s newfound momentum, the move, announced today, should help Devicescape build its customer base in a big way — which will be crucial as the company goes after hardware vendors. Devicescape said users can download an app from the Android Market or Nokia’s Ovi to access hundreds of …

Introducing the $1,500 Intel e-book reader

The Amazon Kindle costs $260. The Barnes and Noble Nook costs $260. The Sony reader is $300. Clearly there’s an established price point for what we call an e-book reader . Jumping into the e-book fray comes the Intel Reader , for fifteen hundred U.S. dollars. No WiFi, no associated book store, but it does include a 5 megapixel camera, and a host of features designed to make it the best choice for vision impaired people. From the VentureBeat review: The paperback-sized device is aimed at 55 million people in the U.S. who have eyesight problems and don’t want to be dependent on others for the pleasure of reading a novel, looking at a …
