LG’s 3D TV and Blu-ray Launch Details Leaked in Embarrassing Google Documents Blunder [3D Tv]

We’ve seen more exciting leaked roadmaps, but it’s rather comical that LG’s leak came about by accidentally sharing a Google Document. A 3D TV , 3D Blu-ray player and TV webcam for 720p Skype chat are all due to launch soon. That 3D TV is actually just a different version of the LH9500 series, named the LX9500, and will be available mid-May. After learning that, it’ll certainly make the TVs announced at CES that are due in March - April a lot less attractive. The BD580 3D Blu-ray player will be on sale in the middle of April, just a few weeks earlier in May the webcam peripheral allowing for 720p Skype chatting on your TV will become available too. Meanwhile, …

ESPN has long been the leader in live HDTV and the network is about to stay ahead of the curve yet again by launching its own 3D network early this summer. But this network is just a test and ESPN is only committing to it through June 2011. So if you really want your kids growing up watching live 3D events, you better support ESPN’s effort. The initial broadcast will be a World Cup soccer match, followed later on by the Summer X Games, NBA games, and collegic football and basketball. It seems like ESPN really doesn’t know how this is going to pan out. There are apparently a lot of questions …

Netbooks Are Hot, But Are They Worthy?

Netbooks have been flying off store shelves all year long, driven by consumers looking for ways to save money during economically challenging times. According to the latest figures from DisplaySearch, netbook revenue is poised to rise 72 percent year-over-year to $11.4 billion in 2009, even as sales of portable PCs overall decline 12 percent to $109.4 billion. With the economy now on the mend, however, netbook sales are expected to be challenged next year because of continuing declines in the average selling price (ASP) of standard notebooks, which offer significant performance advantages. As a result, notebook makers are steadily “increasing the performance gap” in comparison with netbooks “while narrowing the price gap,” noted DisplaySearch Director John Jacobs. …

Radio Shack Black Friday ad

Oh, I get it. It’s called “Shack” Friday at Radio Shack instead of Black Friday. Because “shack” sounds like “black” and “shack” is part of Radio Shack’s name. So basically, they just switched the two words around. I get it. Know what else? The damn sale starts on Thursday! What a world! “Most stores open at 10 AM Thursday,” says the circular. And then they open at 5:30 in the morning on Friday! That’s Shack-rilege! See how I worked the name of the store into that one? Anyhoo, here’s the good stuff. Doorbusters are marked with an asterisk. Does anyone in tech pay attention to unemployment numbers? Hard to buy that new gizmo when you don’t have a job, right?

Writing about tech is so peculiar. On one hand we’re expected to be enthusiastic about the things we cover; no one wants to see us being negative and dismissive about every little thing. That’s no fun. On the other hand, you don’t want a bunch of ninnies bleating on about how great this year’s piece of plastic is compared to last year’s. How is that useful to anyone? A bit of skepticism is necessary so we don’t come across as cheerleaders for this or that company, or for this or that device. You can’t be objective if you worship the ground that the two …
