Weigh to go helps check against excess luggage

Those who travel frequently know what a hassle it is when it comes to packing your baggage, ensuring that it does not surpass the weight limit in any way so that you won’t be slapped with exorbitant charges. Well, why not get the Weigh to go unit, as this device relies on a couple of Velcro straps as well as a lockable steel carabineer that prevents folks from stealing it. Of course, anyone with nefarious intentions will be able to take off with it if they want to, but for the ordinary man on the street, it is much more…

Small Business Spotlight: Drink Some Wine At Local Wine Events

The Local Wine Events website may be ugly as sin, but if you’re a wine lover, you’ve probably already got it bookmarked. This is a small ten year old business being run out of Pennsylvania with about a million page views a month. It’s a pretty straightforward business. You go there to find local wine events. People who are having wine events pay to list them there, and there is lots of other advertising as well. 1,500 new events are posted each week. Despite their size the site has gotten some big attention. Gary Vaynerchuck had owner Eric Orange on his show last year, and…

Kazaa Takes A Swing At Symantec After Adware Accusations

The history of P2P file sharing service Kazaa (which actually started life as “KaZaA”) is known to most of us born in the eighties or before, and consists mainly of copyright related lawsuits and adware-ridden software. The gist of the story can be found on its Wikipedia profile , but what many seem to forget in present times is that the service is still around , serving users an unlimited amount of (licensed) songs for a $20 monthly subscription fee. Recently, a Symantec security program apparently identified the Kazaa desktop client as high-risk, flagging the software as adware. This prompted Brilliant Digital Entertainment, the company that operates Kazaa, to issue a special notice…

What Is This Mysterious Facebook Music App?

Facebook Music may not exist, but you may have it installed anyway. Right now if you log into the site and go to Facebook’s “Edit Applications” screen, you’ll probably encounter a new application at the top of the list: Music . And it’s pretty clear that this isn’t just some third party app; the application links to Facebook.com/music, which is the same format used by other official Facebook applications, including photos (Facebook.com/photos) and events (Facebook.com/events). But the application doesn’t work at all — clicking it just brings you to your Facebook News Feed. We reached out to Facebook about the mysterious application. They’ve directed us to a Facebook Music Player app that appears …

ESPN has long been the leader in live HDTV and the network is about to stay ahead of the curve yet again by launching its own 3D network early this summer. It seems like ESPN really doesn’t know how this is going to pan out. There are apparently a lot of questions …

Hacker Breaks Kindle’s Proprietary E-Book Protection

Internet retailer Amazon.com had all the luck in getting its family of proprietary Kindle e-book readers into the hands of consumers while its rivals were faced with delays, but its luck may have turned. The Kindle’s copyright protection has been hacked. An Israeli hacker who goes by the name Labba says he has been able to break the Kindle’s digital-rights management protection, allowing its electronic books to be viewed on non-Kindle devices. A U.S. hacker has also reportedly created a program called Unswindle that converts books stored in the free Kindle for PC application into other formats. DRM prevents making copies…

How the Decade Was Supposed To Turn Out (Spoiler: Christopher Reeve Walking) [Y2k10]

“In the years since the new millennium, the world has seen such progress.” So begins a noted Super Bowl commercial from 2000 that milked the Christopher Reeve sympathy/inspiration angle to show how well an investment firm can predict the future. The commercial, for Nuveen Investments , which is still around, says rather general things about advancements in AIDS and cancer treatments, but some of its suggestions are more specific. For example, the opening shot shows that the New York of the future will have new skyscrapers. Yes. Sure. That was a pretty safe bet. Really, the more prescient thing would’ve been to mention the lack of certain skyscrapers. It’s notable, however, that the Twin…

For Palm, Yet Another Wrenching Crisis

Palm is the Jack Bauer of the mobile industry. Its story is one of high-tension drama in which it lurches from one crisis to another, saving itself from the jaws of despair only to face some new and more daunting threat, all while the clock ominously ticks away. But Palm’s current management is cunning, and we’ve learned never to write it off as finished. The latest grim plot twist came last week when Palm reported its fiscal second-quarter earnings . Smartphones sold to consumers fell 4 percent from a year ago, before Palm even debuted the Pre . A costly ad campaign sank gross margins to 25.6 percent from 27.9 percent a quarter earlier. And the number of apps for sale …

Facebook Backs Off as Founder’s Pictures Go Public

In a not-uncommon development for the social-networking leader, Facebook’s recently released privacy controls are leaving the company a bit red-faced. As a result of a new policy that by default makes users’ profiles, photos and friends lists available on the web, almost 300 personal photos of founder Mark Zuckerberg became publicly available, a development that had gossip sites like Gawker yukking it up. Kashmir Hill, a blogger for True/Slant, first reported Zuckerberg’s new exposure, noting, “Either Mark Zuckerberg got a whole lot less private or Facebook’s CEO doesn’t understand the company’s new privacy settings.” Under the new privacy regime, user profiles are exposed to the web unless users are proactive about limiting access. Hill reported that while Zuckerberg has in the past offered…
